Optimum Aperture

As a long time 35mm user, I tend to use my lenses at f8 mostly, but what is the ideal aperture for the 18~55 lens on the K10d ?

The one that gives the sharpest picture.....
I don't have that lens anymore, I gave the one that came with my K20 away to a friend, but I recall the MTF program curve tended to keep the lens pretty close to f/5.6 all the time.

Generally a couple stops down from maximum aperture is the "sharpest" setting, but many situations benefit from other apertures.

Looking at the Pentax SMC-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL - Review / Test Report, it looks like f/8 is the sweet spot. At 18mm, the centre is (slightly) sharper at f/5.6, but (slightly) softer at the border.

Remember the old news photographers joke:

Q - "That's a great shot! How did you get it?"

A - "f/8 and be there."

Definitely f/8. I never shoot any other aperture with this lens, unless I'm desperate for light or don't care about off-centre sharpness.
