The second is with my sony H2 and new 1.7tele. Not Bokeh, but heatwaves. It was a 105 degree day and I shot these folks across a field. It looked blurry on the lcd and I almost erased it. But when I got home I could see it was blurred from the 1/4 mile of heatwaves between me and them.
Still one of my favorite mistakes. Not a Monet, but my Phonet

Here is a technique I've only dabbled in, but one of these days I want to explore more. I came across it at DPR couple of years ago and the person who explained it called it "Camera Painting" You might be able to find the thread if you do a search there for the phrase "Camera Painting". The idea is to take a relatively long exposure while moving the camera in a controlled way. He was able to generate some very evocative images with it, most of them being pretty abstract. I gave it a brief try and this is the best of the bunch. In my practice I found it difficult to produce anything worthwhile. The difficulity is to open the shutter slightly before you start moving the camera so there is a hint of the object (s) being photographed. Here is one of the few of mine that I liked, some backlit leaves of a redleaved plant.

Still using the Nokton wide open, but I decided on a foray into the world of texturing. Its an early attempt for me so I erred on the side of caution, it may not stand out but I was going for a vintage/art/paper feel.

This wanders a bit from the image (in its natural state) appearing as art, but for me its the Noktons bokeh that makes it anywhere near believable as such anyhow. I just gave it a little push

FWIW, I threw down the chips for the T*85/1.4. Couple weeks, hopefully by then I'll have some sun to test it out on the art front (I have high hopes).

I moved forward with the texture accentuation, adding a layer of scanned linen (overlay 50%ish) There is no other PS done to the image, just Nokton bokeh on linen. I've begun to covet the slightly exagerated diffusive softness of the 58 at 1.4 (and apparently the T*85/1.4, can't wait) for taking the edge off of an image so as to lend further credibilty to it as a painting. The images just come out 'done' from the camera.

Thanks Ron. Perhaps a soft focus filter or lens might add an element to the arsenal? I wonder if the Pentax 85 soft focus lens adds that diffusion of the in-focus plane as the Nokton does wide open, or if it does it another way... hmm.

I'm still just a big rookie at all this (photography included) but my 'art' interest was piqued when I discovered f1.4 on the Nokton. Now I'm trying to find lenses that share this diffusion look that gives a natural softness. I've messed with softening a bit in Lightroom (-clarity) and its a nice effect but I always see it as an effect, I've tended to avoid software filters thus far. Perhaps someday someone will code specific, dynamic soft filtering designed to give the look of specific old lenses. This is common in the music field, where emulations of old synths by new digital synth is the standard. I'm actually surprised no one has capitalized on that yet in this field (maybe they have and I missed it?)
