Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 NON-MACRO, anyone?

I know there are a bunch of good review about the 18-50mm F2.8 Macro, but I can't find much info on the NON-Macro version.

Does anyone have experience with this lens, or can point me in the right direction?

A more concrete question is, whether its quality is going to be worse than my DA 16-45mm.

My thoughts are:
- I can live without 2mm on the wide end.
- I'd like to have an extra stop.

I really like my 16-45mm, which replaced the kit lens, but I can't help but think about that ever elusive extra f-stop.

And there is no way in hell I can afford a DA* 16-50mm on my grad student budget

Thanks for any help or advice in advance.

Tim.

Apparently the Macro version is much better than the original non-macro.

Thanks.
I'm gonna guess that means that my DA 16-45 quality is going to be better, so I'll stick with it.

Maybe if I strike gold in my backyard, or something, I'll by a DA* someday.

I shot the same subjects at the same distance with the same camera under the same lighting conditions, and the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 EX non-macro that I have turned out to be considerably sharper than my DA 16-45, so I let the DA 16-45 go. It could be that I have a really good EX 18-50 and a really bad sample of the DA 16-45, but frankly I was surprised at the results, and tried several different times with different tests, but every time the Sigma won. They're about the same price these days, although I would rather have let them both go and bought the newer Sigma 18-50 macro, I just couldn't afford it since I was going to use the money from the lens sale to buy a D-BG2.

Say whaat? I heard that the non-macro was sharper than the macro version! I wonder which rumor we should trust.

I also heard that the Sigma 18-50mm was better than the Tamron 17-50mm.

I'm going to get to the bottom of this matter somehow...

I think it's the 70-200mm f/2.8 DG in which the non-macro version is sharper than the macro. Of course Sigma is now coming out with the Macro II, which is supposed to be sharper than the Macro I. Confused?

A lens test done by pop photo shows the sigma is a sharper lens than the pentax 16-50 f2.8,but lacks the build quality of the pentax.
