So it basically works like an m42 lens with a built in adapter?

Or a T-mount lens.

So for half a stop you will pay $150 more than the Samyang 85/1.4 and have no open aperture metering or flash automation.

It's even worse on Nikon. A Nikon won't even be able to use the light meter at all.

The aperture isn't the only thing about a lens... it might be optically superior, I don't know. It better be!

Also, at this point we are reaching the law of diminishing returns, where people will pay 100% more for a 5% increase in quality (or a half stop in aperture...). Otherwise, the only 50mm lens one would ever need is the 40 dollar M 50 1.7. Nobody would buy the f1.2. It's just one extra stop or so, and at least 10x the price, so why would anyone do it? Because one can...

It seems that too much is being sacrificed to the optics. If the thing is not going to be able to yield aperture control to the camera, it at least needs to be able to report its current aperture and focal length appropriately so they can be worked with by the camera and (eventually) fed into the EXIF data. I think that's a fair thing to expect from a contemporary lens. Older lenses, of course, get a pass... but IMHO nothing else will do for new.

I don't know, I'd rather have the option to buy the lens if I want to, rather than say it shouldn't exist at all.

If it's not for you, don't buy it... others might find it useful. I never understood this philosophy of "if I don't want it, it shouldn't be available" that I see in fora all the time.

Not saying it shouldn't be available, just suggesting that the people towards whom it's being pitched might not find it worthwhile if it doesn't support functions they regard as being important or essential.
