Do you really think your're going to listen to the one who's going to say NO you don't need one of, if not, the greatest lens Pentax ever made?

Also, my 20-40 can be my outdoor lens, water resistant and all that. And the 31 can be my fast indoor lens.

Does the 31 really deliver a real advantage over my 20-40?
be aware it's out there and one day you may really want it. one of the best landscape and astrophotography lenses i have, btw.

Yes, it's LBA and you don't need it. But you want it. And knowing that you can have one if you choose to, will give you peace of mind, and you can be more enthusiastic and creative when you have that "inner peace". Until the next LBA episode, at least.

Seriously, my greatest regret was delaying the FA31 purchase. (I tried inoculating myself with the DAL 35/2.4, but it didn't work. Now, I'm thinking of upgrading the DAl 35/2.4 to the 35 Limited. $%^#$#%!)

It seems I'm the only one here who was pushed to wait by recent RP news & rumors.

Easy, just check the SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited Reviews - FA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database and see if you like the image quality of that lens

Yes! I have the 20-40 and love it. I just purchased the 31 (the lens of my long desire), and both have their fair share of the pixie dust but the 31 is sharper throughout its range.Sorry to be an enabler.

There are many good answers so far. Lens speed was not mentioned so far, that along with the sharpness of the FA31 is the reason I will someday pick the 31 over any zoom lens.
And size, not that it's an issue really for any Pentax (zoom or not) lens.

$750 for a used Made in Japan copy. That's what I paid anyway.

What? The 20-40 is sharper than the 16-50? LBA is starting to rear its ugly head. ::Must resist:: I n e e d the 20-40 now......

The 20-40 & FA31 are a good combo - the 31 gets swapped out for the 20-40 when I need the WR. Other than that, the FA31 is my preferred lens for the focal length, it's that good.

A little off the subject, but my 20-40 hasn't seen much action since I got the 31 and a 16-85, other than it's small size & lightweight, it's really become obsolete.

Lol!
Sad how LBA works. The downside is trying to figure which lenses to carry so that you don't feel like a pack mule. I am on a trip right now and have quickly relearned that no matter how many lenses I carry, I can only use ONE at a time.😉

The real question is... why did you buy the 20-40 and not the 31?

Its a rare shoot that I don't have at least three cameras, each with a set of lenses, plus a tripod and a canteen.
I could sure use a few pixies to help carry the gear. Then I could add on some lighting equipment...

I'm planning on adding the HD-DA20-40 Limited first, but the FA31 Limited is on my future-upgrade list.
At least the FA31 works in two formats.
