If you aren't going for the the Pentax 150-450, then I guess the Sigma 50-500 will have to do. Personally I don't understand a lot of this long lens stuff. Really, the difference between 500-600 mm is just not that much another 20% of image size... yawn... the thought that there should be a gazillion lenses between 400 and 600mm for an APS-c camera, yawn... Pentax can probably support one lens in this focal length, and it looks like it's going to be the 50-500. So what's the fuss? And by the way.. a 150-450 sharp enough to support a TC gets you a lot more than any 50-600 type lens that is already soft before the TC. As long as you can get what you need, wanting more choice is irrelevant. I can't believe about how much time is wasted discussing lenses going off the market, that just weren't that good. These lenses are expensive, Tamron and Sigma have put a lot of effort into making lot's of choices in long zooms. And I'd argue they've targeted a market segment that is always going to be small, and over-saturated it. Like throwing poop at the wall and seeing what sticks. This is planned attrition in my estimation, and an ill advised competition to produce lenses that aren't good enough for pros, and are too expensive for most amateurs.
Quote: I had been looking at this lens for a while, but always had other things to do with that much cash. Finally had a bunch of extra disposable income and started looking for the 150-500.
Sounds like an unfortunate case of "you snooze you lose." But the 50-500 is still out there.
