i guess that sigma does have to cover it's own user base, no matter how small.

I can tell you that March 23 was the day the last K-mount 150-500 disappeared from the top online photography stores.
I had been looking at this lens for a while, but always had other things to do with that much cash. Finally had a bunch of extra disposable income and started looking for the 150-500. I was surprised when Amazon was out of stock with no set date to get them back in stock. Adorama was out as well. When I checked BH I saw they had the non-OS version left. Or at least the title listed it non-OS while the description indicated that it did have stabilization. The listing even had a different Part No. from the OS version (which was sold out). Since the listing seemed contradictory I called BH and tried to figure out which lens they actually had. Once they looked at the listing neither of two reps could figure out which lens they actually had in stock. One of the reps said he would have the lens pulled and he would call me back. About 30 minutes later he called and said the lens was the OS version and it was the last one in stock. I bought it immediately and have been a happy camler ever since.

I got an email from Sigma today advertising a web page that would tell me which version of the 150-600 was right for me...

I wish there was an easy way to leave feedback to the clueless at Sigma USA. Which reminds me, time to unsubscribe from the Sigma mailing list...

I have the Sigma 150-500 for Pentax mount and I am very pleased with its performance. I use it with my K5IIs. As far as availability goes, you may want to invest in the Sigma 50-500 to have the range at the short end and have the telephoto range also. B and H, Adorama, and Amazon still offer it for $1509 USD plus tax if you are within the state of the seller. That is less than the 150-450 as you probably already know.

I can certainly see why they would substitute the 150-600 in all mounts. The major manufacturers all have popular zooms in that range, and offering something more seems like a good move.

Yes, it would be very nice to get the 150-600 in K-mount. But that's not going to happen.

If you aren't going for the the Pentax 150-450, then I guess the Sigma 50-500 will have to do. Personally I don't understand a lot of this long lens stuff. Really, the difference between 500-600 mm is just not that much another 20% of image size... yawn... the thought that there should be a gazillion lenses between 400 and 600mm for an APS-c camera, yawn... Pentax can probably support one lens in this focal length, and it looks like it's going to be the 50-500. So what's the fuss? And by the way.. a 150-450 sharp enough to support a TC gets you a lot more than any 50-600 type lens that is already soft before the TC. As long as you can get what you need, wanting more choice is irrelevant. I can't believe about how much time is wasted discussing lenses going off the market, that just weren't that good. These lenses are expensive, Tamron and Sigma have put a lot of effort into making lot's of choices in long zooms. And I'd argue they've targeted a market segment that is always going to be small, and over-saturated it. Like throwing poop at the wall and seeing what sticks. This is planned attrition in my estimation, and an ill advised competition to produce lenses that aren't good enough for pros, and are too expensive for most amateurs.

Sounds like an unfortunate case of "you snooze you lose." But the 50-500 is still out there.

At 2x the cost of the 150-500. At that price point the DA* 300 and 1.4x TC is a better choice.

The DA* 300 and 1.4 TC in many people's minds was already the better choice, even given the relatively cheap 150-500 cost.

There may even be an increased demand to find copies of the Tokina AT-X 80-400/4.5-5.6 (especially the second "AF II" version), which was also not released in K-mount when that version got upgraded to a third version -- it is a good, physically compact, reasonably fast, and reasonably long zoom alternative.

Except if you had actually bothered to read the post, you would have known that I was able to purchase to 150-500. But I guess that result wouldn't have suited the tone of your post.

My apologies, I often lose concentration in long posts.

Short attention span, ADD and all that.

It still sounds like a "you snooze you lose" scenario, just with a twist at the end, where you don't lose..

I am pretty sure my next lens purchase will be the 150-450, with as many bird photos as I am shooting lately. I'll be interested to see how the 1.4x does on it, as well.

well that kinda stinks as that would be my big purchase....going long......as it took awhile to save up for a cheap bower 14/2.8 that has been discontinued by b&h.......glad I got it before they stopped selling it......so much for the long lens....reckon something will come along

You can find used ones here in the marketplace and on fleabay. I actually picked up an almost mint 50-500 OS HSM Bigma here on the marketplace for a nice price. My point I was actually trying to get at originally was how new third party lenses seem to be disappearing in the Pentax mount. That does concern me a bit even though there is tons and tons of legacy glass out there.
