Strange results. I had an A 2X-S and it deteriorated IQ on my A*300mm f4 to the point where I wouldn't use it. The Kenko 1.5X was much better, and the Pentax HD 1.4X is best.

I should have been clearer on this one. The A-2x TC I was referring to is a SAITEX Auto 2x TC KR (Japan) teleconvertor, not the Pentax A-2x-S unit. It looks nothing like Pentax unit. In the earlier testing I had a Pentax A-1.4x-S on loan from user @georgecape prior to purchasing the DA-1.4x TC for my self.

The A-1.4x-S result with the DA*300 and other prime lenses was very good. And hence confidence to purchase DA-1.4x to get auto-focus, although other user reports were also starting to praise the TC. The DA-1.4x is every bit as good imho.

The big surprise for me was how good the old SAITEX Auto 2x TC is with a good lens as evidenced in the TC stacking results. It out resolved the DA-1.4x result, but that is expected with good optical magnification. Only issue is manual focus only.

Is there a SAITEX unit made specifically for pentax or does it require some sort of converter? I'm not seeing anything on ebay.

And manual exposure, no P-TTL flash. P-TTL flash is no big deal for telephoto, but I use converters for macro, often with P-TTL flash.

It is a KR embossed, so Ricoh K mount I presume, but not problems mounting. It looks like pin was disabled before I got it.

Someone did, and there is a thread about someplace. As far as I remember they were pleased and AF did work. But I would think it would be iffy since we would be at f/8 at that point.

I just purchased this Saitex Auto 2X Teleconverter from Ebay. I paid lots and lots and lots of money for it, so I really, REALLY HOPE this is the same one you tested here
It looks better than the new HD 1.4 TC so it's gotta be worth a lot more...right?...Right

It's got P/K embossed on the other side so it is K-mount compatible.

It looks awfully a lot like the Takumar-A 2x tc.

That's it. The same one as I have and tested with very good results, albeit manual everything.

Did I get taken.....!! About USD15 in my case, compared to about USD600 for DA-1.4x

Looks similar.

But hard to reconcile if same optics as a Takumar A-2x TC as reviews in Database seem mediocre and not consistent with the results I got on DA*300 and also FA*600, or else I have an exception variant... DA*300+2x compared well to FA*600, and I even did a double stack on the FA*600 (now owned by user @johan kruger) but that was dodgy on vibration at 1680mm FL. Note DA*300 and FA*600 not done on same day, so some light differences.

Well that's good news! If this 10 dollar piece of glass can get me the sharpness of a $500 Pentax HD 1.4x I'll be surprised. I purchased an Albinar-ADG Auto 2X TC last year that I now use as a doorstop, so as you can see I was a little tepid about buying another cheap TC. But for 10 bucks if this one doesn't work out I'll have 2 Door Stops!
