TC for K10D & SIGMA 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 DG APO?

Hi everyone,

I just bought my first DSRL, a Pentax K10D, as well as a SIGMA 70-300mm F4.0-5.6 DG APO.

Which x1.4 - x2 teleconverter would you recommend for this lens/camera combination?

Thank you very much in advance for your kind replies!

Cheers

TT

I'm getting very good results from the Kenko 1.5x teleplus mc with the tamron 70-300mm ld di macro. Since the tamron is the competitor of the sigma, i suspect it will produce similar results.

I own this lens and have taken some great shots with it.

Just keep in mind that it isn't exactly the brightest lens out there. With a 2x teleconverter, you're going to need bright lights/sun to keep it usable.

Thanks very much, everyone, for your kind replies! I'll grab these ideas and go google a bit (remember the days we actually went to a camera store instead?)

Cheers

My experience with lenses that have an apature of smaller than F4 is that they don't work well with any TC for autofocus.

You will get away with an 1.5X on an F4 lens but on an F5.6 lens it may hunt for autofocus excessivly.

I personally use both the 1.4x and 2x sigmas but only on my 70-200 F2.8

I use the Pentax 1.7x AF TC on my 300mm F4 and this also works, but it will not focus at all on an F5.6 lens.

To echo Lowell's comments, a 1.4 loses one stop of light, so you'd be at f/8 at the long end. And 2x loses TWO stops of light, so f/11 Not good for autofocus....

Again, thanks very much for all the info! Now, I asked a few camera stores here in Taipei about which 1.4x TC to use for the combo K10D and the SIGMA 70-300mm, and was told there is no manufacturer that makes such a TC.

I find that a tad dubious...are any of you using this combo and a TC? If so, what TC is it?

Thanks again!

if you want a good answer, go onto the sigma web site, they list all the lenses they recommend for use with their TCs

Hi everyone

again, thanks for all y'all's kind input! I've decided to drop the TC idea for now until I have a faster lens.

Cheers from Taiwan

Good decision! It really isn't any good on a slow lens...

I've been using the Sigma 1.4x TC (non EX), with so-so results. It's not great, but it works. It all depends on what you need it to do for you. AF will hunt a lot if you aren't already close to being in focus (even in good light), but once close, there's little difference than without it. I got mine used for $50, so for me it was worth it. Would I buy a brand new one just for use with this lens? With the exception of the $80 Kenko, probably not.
