"The infamous Ricoh pin"

I use, and very much like, a couple of Ricoh lenses, The 28-100 and 50mm f1.2 are prized lenses in my kit and I'll almost certainly be getting more as they turn up. These lenses are vintage manual lenses of some forty years age, and I keep running across threads talking about the pin that apparently stopped aperture down jamming the lens on modern camera bodies. I haven't had any problems, but at the moment I use a Canon camera and adapters to mount the lenses. I want to upgrade, a K50 looks pretty certain to be the new body, but has anyone heard of any problems mounting vintage Ricoh lenses on this body?

Thanks,

Hal55

It seems that it is only with pins that have a squared off end like the mount locking pin that cause problems. If the end is rounded it should be ok. However if it makes you sleep easier at night by all means remove the pin.

Personally I would just remove the pin (unless you particularly wanted to use it with old Ricoh cameras). Its not hard to do and I have had lenses get stuck with a somewhat rounded pin.

I have several Ricoh lenses and all have the rounded pin. I have had no issues with them on a K-7 and now a K5-IIs. But as they say, just beware of the possible issues.

Not all lenses with the 'Ricoh pin' are dangerous. Not all Rikenon lenses had a P pin. Only the P series, and only the early ones have a pin style that can get stuck in the AF screw drive of a Pentax camera. Most of the dangerous lenses are third party, especially zoom lenses made in Korea.

The 28-100 had 3 different version. 2 of those version have the P pin. The 55/1.2 was only made for a year, 1996-1997, and did not have a P setting.

And it is REALLY easy to remove the pin. Just unscrew the chrome mounting plate/rim, lift the pin out, put back the mounting plate.

Guess it's not that hard. I was frightened to put a screwdriver to any lens after the mess I made of my one and only try. Thanks boriscleto!

We may or may not be talking about the same lens here, but mine (Rikenon P 55mm f/1.2) certainly does. The previous owner had no issues with The Infamous Pin on that particular lens, and I've taken it off my K-5 enough times not to be worried anymore either.

Could you post a few pictures? I can't find any info about a Rikenon P 55/1.2 on the web.

The only info I can find is on the XR 55/1.2 which is a rebadged Cosina.

I would suggest that you DO NOT take the chance! Just remove the pin and sleep easier knowing that you won't break out into that very uncomfortable cold sweat when you discover that your lens is stuck on your beloved camera! Ask me how I know?

It's much akin to riding a bicycle.... once you remove one pin, then it's a piece of cake from then on. Simple as pie.
