I am not trying to overstate the effect of coatings on sharpness of the given lens. Actually we do not know the exact modifications made to the original design of SMC DA 21 Lim. So the "HD" version might have some other differences as well, other than the coatings and rounded blades.

Quite possible......

It's not uncommon with any manufactured goods that some changes may be incorporated into the product that the consumer will not be made aware off. These could be incorporated into the product for a myriad of reasons ......with both intended and unintended consequences.

As far as the 21 goes, there seems to be avid "Star Burst" fans...... nothing wrong with that.....plenty of 2nd hand 21 and 15's around if that rocks your boat. It will be much the same when the FA Limiteds are updated I reckon (not referring to starbursts....but other stuff people are passionate about).

I must admit I will occasionally add a starburst.... generally with the Topaz plug in.

HD has 5 reviews.

SMC has 79 reviews.

The fact that the HD has better reviews doesn't really mean anything at this point.
The fact that the SMC has more reviews doesn't mean much. A 1972 VW Bug, will have more reviews than the 2016 version when it arrives, but it won't be better.

Comparing n=5 to n=79 is completely inaccurate, and any statistician will say so. The actual ratings are irrelevant--the number of reviews is critical to the validity of said reviews.

I dunno bout that. The newer VW bugs reliability has been downright dismal. I'll take the 72'

Rode from Sacramento to Anaheim at 60hp in non-reclining bucket seats for 8+hours. Gimme new every time.

It'll take time as many want all their pics to have the same special effect/look.
