Fair price for a DA 16-50 with a broken SDM?

Hi,

what would be a fair price to offer for a lens with a broken SDM?

I see there is a bunch of 'untested' lenses going for $250-300 and fully functioning ones for $400-500. The ebay listing asks for $550, which does not seem fair at all.
What would be appropriate though? I am thinking somewhere between $300-400.

Also, is it worth it to buy a 16-50 with a broken SDM?

You would still have f2.8 speed and weather resistance. It all depends on how you value each relative strength of the 16-50 compared to alternatives like the DA16-45, 18-55wr or a few good primes.

I think the extra functionality would be welcome. I am just trying to see if offering ~$350 would be appropriate.

Depends on the condition but for me $350 might be on the high side. How much is the seller asking?

I'd say around $350 would be fair.

The sdm repair is about $250 so $350 would be fair assuming everything else in the lens is in nice condition.

That's about the going rate of fully functional ones. Assuming everything else is in very good condition and accessories inluded (Hood, Pouch and Caps) Give it a shot at $350 and see what he says.

From the standpoint of a fully functioning SDM 16-50, yes, $350 would be about fair. However, there may be a secondary market that may actually like the 16-50 without SDM and feel good to pay in the $400's for a good copy without SDM. A few months ago I found an exceptionally nice-looking 16-50 on ebay with a failed SDM. I determined my maximum was about $380 so just bid that. The lens finally sold for about $425, iirc. I'd have to believe that the buyer was just going to convert the lens to screw drive and then enjoy great optics, WR, f2.8, and a fabulous build. A pretty good deal if you didn't want or need SDM.
