Yashinon 55mm f/1.8 vs. Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 -- a nasty and unfair test

Both shot wide open while attached to the Pentax F 1.7x AF converter. Center of frame, full pixel, with no processing. +- 5' from subject.

Agree with Ryan. Never saw too much point in using a TC with this focal length range...extension tubes, sure. But TCs? Nasty, for sure.

By the way, are the photos posted in the order given in your subject heading?

So which one is which? I think the FA 50mm is the second image.

Well I don't get it. The first one is not even in focus???

Agreed on not using a TC.

This first one is very much in focus. It's the FA 50mm. The Yashinon 55mm f/1.8 is very very sharp. It's a dirty secret. I'm still going to post something a bit more objective, but this old lens can not be beat.

DoF changes quite dramatically at wide apertures. Even from 1.4 to 1.2 is a big change. If the focus target is the edge of the table, this test mostly shows the effect of aperture on DoF at 1.8 vs 1.4, more than anything else.

The screw head being encompassed in the in-focus area of the Yashicon saved it from showing CAs, which can be seen in the metal ring which is out of focus above the screw, it looks to me if it were equally out of the focus plane, it would be showing them similarly. But I'm not convinced that the 1.4 shot is actually hitting the same focus target to begin with. It would be easier to determine if the focus plane could be seen on both of its sides.

On a side note, many (of the better, to me) 'fast' lenses give a soft diffusive effect at wide open which, when used for what it is, is worth every penny. It usually equates to smooth bokeh and the magical 'dreamy' quality. Most stop down to become very sharp if that is necessary.

Not to say I don't appreciate comparisons, I always do

just out of curiosity, but have you checked if your FA50 is focused on a focusing chart? My copy of the FA50 along with my K10D was front focused by about 6mm and it produced images similar to those posted.
