Further FYI:

150-450mm = 4.4lb; 560mm = 6.7lb
150-450 collapsed, shade reversed = 9 1/2 inches; 560mm shade reverse = 20 1/5 inches.

Max f=stop @ 450mm or 560mm = f5.6

The 560 has to offer a lot to justify twice the price. Chances are, if you really need reach, the 560 will probably give better IQ with the 1.4X TC.

Shall we consider the price per kilogram of glass, the DA560 is overpriced.
- DA*300: 1000 Euro/Kg
- DFA150-450: 1000 Euros/Kg
- DA560: 1600 Euros/Kg

I'm wondering about how to cover the supertele range.
- Using a DFA 70-200 2.8 + TC (approx. 100-300 f4) and a longer prime @500 or above.
- Or using a 150-450 (but the 70-200 without TC still needed for sports).

Any opinion on that ?
I have a Tamron 70-200 f2.8, DA*300mm, HD DA 1.4X RC and Kenko 1.5X PZ TC. The Pentax TC works with either lens. The Kenko TC works with the Tamron only. Total cost for all was about $2500.

Lots of versatility with these combos. I can shoot (in APS-C terms) with either lens alone, 70-200 f2.8 & 300mm f4, or with a TC on either or both; 105-300mm f4 & 420mm f5.6.

audiobomber, I've got the same as you. But I find the DA300 too long for short range, and too short for birding. I'd prefer to have a 400 f4 with TC. Pentax does not have one.

Given the performance of the DA*300 against any zoom covering that range, I'd be very surprised if the DA*560 wasn't significantly better. The real question is whether one needs that extra IQ.

Sharpness is as valuable as having more focal length, because we can crop from 24Mpixel to 8Mpixel and still have a decent image quality.

Maybe in some cases, but I'm not sure why that is a response to my post. The 560 is both longer and most likely sharper.

At some point, a lens is sharp enough to do what you need it to do, and it may not be worth it to pay twice as much, carry more weight, etc. Not having used or seen comprehensive tests of the 150-450 or the 560, it is hard to say whether that is true in this case.

Canon has two, but they're $6000 and $7000 and twice as heavy as a DA*300. I can easily handhold the DA*300 + TC all day long. I think the extra weight of a 400mm f4 would not suit my style (long hikes in the woods).

Ya we'd all prefer to have 400 ƒ4, at least we think we do, until we consider paying for it or carrying it.

My 400 f4 Tamron is definitely a location lens, not carry-about, and I have not, would not attempt to hand-hold it.

But what about the important part... is it a chick magnet?

A birding friend who shoots Canon has one of the $7,000 variety, and it is a beauty. He does not use it far from his car, though.

I was tempted by the 400/2.8 KEH had for a reasonable price a month or so back, but the cost of the pack mule to carry it nixed that idea.

The little sheltie is more adept at that, but I've long since retired from the hunt.

You can still view the sport from the sidelines though.
