So I'm about to pull the trigger on purchasing the DA*50-135. I feel very comfortable with the K10D after learning to use it right with the kit lens and old F(A) 35-80 and 80-200. I like to shoot everything I possibly can and don't really specialize on any one thing.

So I thought I'd start building up my bag with some fast, quality glass like the 50-135.

Is there any reason I shouldn't buy one? Am I missing a lens which would be a better use of my money?

I really respect the opinions of people on this forum, don't always listen to them or agree, but I really do value what people on here take the time to write.

Cheers in advance for any replies!
There is *NO* reason not to buy it. It is superb. Some samples:

You are killing us all who have LBA lust over this lens and that includes me. I usually refrain myself from opening any threads related to limited lens. I want to jump in from the other side of the fence to give the obvious reason on cost. But having great pictures such as yours are priceless in the argument on LBA terms. Your pictures make my argument a mood point with annoyance.

I for one resist the DA * 50-135 for the cost reason that I can't justify for novice and amateur use in the hobby. If I manage to make money out of my hobby, that will be a different story.

I now go with "Poor man's choice for DA * 50-135" to satisfy that focal range for a small fraction of the cost with slower speed. I paid $125 for that old Pentax K 45-125mm f/4.0 lens.

When DA 60-250 comes out , I wouldn't part with my 50-135. Even with the 77mm, I find at the 50-135 is just so simply outstanding that I can't look past it.

If I sell my kit, definitely one the last ones I'd part with.

I am sort of in the same boat as you. I am also very much interested in this lens. I have convinced myself that this is the one that I want (not need). I know, when does need ever enter into the equation. I am at that wonderful point in life where I can afford just about anything I want (as long as the controller of the checkbook agrees). But, I don't want to spend the money and find out I don't like it, for any unknown reason. So, in July, my wife and I will be visiting our grandson in WA for a week, and I am renting this lens + the FA 50 f/1.4 from camerarentals.com and I plan to shoot the crap out of both of them. I don't forsee any reason why I would not like both of them, but just want to make sure before I purchase.

Yeap!
If you photograph in harsh light conditions there is much flare.
Look some extreme examples here and here

And there is CA and fringing wide open.
Look 100% crops here and here
As you can see here the center of the image is perfectly in focus, so the softness is natural to the lens at the border wide open.
Also look the parot and the sleepy duck on a previous quote.

Other example of PF 100% crop here and the hole picture here

Also I have a lot of reasons you should buy one. But it is out of topic

Isn't the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 a much bigger and heavier lens?

My DA* 50-135/2.8 is the best zoom that I own, even better than my Sigma 70-200/2.8, 100-300/4, and 77/1.8 Limited. If the time ever comes when I have to downsize, this will be the last lens to go in its focal ranges, and that includes my Limited primes and macros.

It's larger and heavier, but both are very well balanced on a body. They don't seem all that different, but then, I've never used them side-by-side or one right after the other. From the product spec pages off the web.

Pentax DA* 50-135/2.8 = 3.0" x 5.4" (76.5mm x 136mm); 24.2 oz. (685g) without hood, 27.0 oz. (765g) with hood

Sigma EX 70-200/2.8 = 3.4" x 7.3" (86.6mm X 184.4mm); 48.3 oz. (1,370g)

2 inches longer and almost double the weight. Something to take into consideration.

Well, my wife has given me the green light as a 10th anniversary gift, so I think I'm 99% sure now that I will buy one, getting a couple of limited primes floated into my mind for a moment but then I thought about being in places like the forum in Rome and switching lenses often turned me off of the primes.

Thanks for all the advice both for and against, I seriously considered all of it.

Now my only thought is to buy the Mack 7 year warranty for an extra $50 or not.......
