Less than $800.00 for **NEW** Sigma 150-500mm APO F5-6.3 DG OS HSM???

This looks like it could be a good buy especially considering how hard it is to find new and that Sigma isn't going to offer either 150-600mm in the K-mount. Any opinions?

If you can find one, yes, it is a good deal.

I think they were $869 or $899 new at the end, so below $800 would be expected for used.

It's new (old stock), not used so you're pretty much confirming this is a good buy. Yes?

Thanks. I've been reading reviews of the store. It's been around for awhile, is brick and mortar, has a 30 return policy, and the reviews I found, while few, are favorable. Very close to pulling the trigger but the DxO rating of the lens isn't great overall. The tests were done using Nikons and only two body/lens combinations came in around 19 and 20; the rest were not so good at around 14.

Are there better telephoto options? Absolutely.
Can they be had for $800? Absolutely not.
The lens is a good value for the money IMO if it is a range you need to add to your kit.

Take a look at what is being done with the lens, not what the measurebators say.

Yeah, no 500mm zoom lens that costs less than a new Kia is going to be "great" on the test bench. I owned a 150-500mm for a while and really liked it. You can always resell it and get most of your money back if you don't fall in love with it.

If you're like me, and a lot of other people, you're going to need to scratch your 500mm itch sooner or later. May as well be sooner!

I took some surfing pics with the Pentax 55-300 recently and got the itch. Hopefully this lens will be a bit sharper. The Sigma and the Q should be an interesting combo at Trestles next week. I might even bring my K-30.

I would need A LOT more than 500mm to take surfing pics from here!

All you people with your oceans and your mountains make me sick!

At least you know what weather is. I miss rain and thunderstorms; grew up in Florida where you could set your watch by the afternoon rains.

The 150-500 gives you the telephoto range you need to have a subject image in view. Then you are able to use different F stops for depth, exposure settings, and ISO to render the way you want the image to look after you press the shutter button. When using it for surfing you would most likely want to set the lens OS setting switch to "1" (on the lens barrel), and make sure your camera SR is off. That is what I do when I use it with my K-5 IIs. That way the two stabilization systems (OS and SR) do not conflict with each other.
