APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM Compatability

I was interested in this lens for my *ist DS. I tried searching the internet to find if the DS supports HSM. Does anyone here know?

I asked Sigma directly and this was their answer:
"I am not 100% sure if your camera supports the HSM.
I double checked around the office and we donít think it does but I would double with Pentax to be sure.
I think their equivalent is SDM."

I asked a retailer that has a preorder on the lens and this was their response:
"From all the info. we have on your Camera and what we have for the Sigma lens you are inquiring about. It looks like they are compatible, since the ist ds is a DSLR, and the Sigma 579109, was designed for the Pentax line of Digital SLR cameras. As long as your camera works with AF lenses, then there should be no problem between this lens and your camera."

I asked Pentax and so far have not gotten a response.

You are going to have to look for the Tamron version. There is another thread here on that lens and it appears to be a stellar lens. The new version of the Sigma is HSM only and the cameras that support that are the K100D Super, K10D, K200D and K20D.

From the Sigma website:

Sigma - Lenses

The only Pentax bodies to support SDM are the K100D Super, K10D, K200D, and K20D. So no, it will not work on the *ist.

Peter.

I think there is a slight correction to your list, it is the K100D super, the K100D I don't think supports HSM (or what ever it's called)

here's the thread on the Tamron. It seems like both will be in a Pentax mount around the same time but the Tamron will be a little cheaper and screw drive for the older bodies.

Btw Lowell, you are correct. It's the K100D super version only.

*ist DS does not have SDM support. The current Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG only has HSM equiv support for Canikon camera. For my DS & K10/K20d, Sigma AF focus is accomplish with the in-body motor.

I checked this against a friend's copy of the Pentax 50-135 SDM. It seems both lens works equally fast and about the same focus accuracy, only the Pentax SDM is quiet, and the Sigma got that familiar motor buzz from the body.

But not for the new model. It's SDM only.
