Took the plunge, Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM

Okay so I finally hit the button and ordered a mint used SMC Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM lens for a good price.

I'm going through a little sticker shock and realization that I will soon have the beast in my hands.

I have loved my HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR, it is light, easy to use and generally excellent IQ. But sometimes it just feels like it is letting me down. Hence the new purchase. I hope I have made the right decision...

Now to sell off enough lenses that I have accumulated in the last couple of years to pay the credit card bill

Darryl

Well done, Sointul, if you're going to go into Greek-style debt for glass it might as well be a beautiful lens like that one!

It's a purchase you won't regret. My old FA*80-200/2.8 doesn't get a look in since I got mine

Congratulations!

Can you tell me how the 55-300 let you down sometimes? I just got me that lens, and somewhere down the road might consider upgrading so your perspectives would he appreciated.

Like you, I agonized over this post, had a lot of remorse over the amount it cost... and still find good cause to switch it out for the 70-210 is Sigma 700-300 every now and then. But overall it's a great lens. Don't sell your 55-300. There's a lot of days I don feel like carrying the 60-250. It's good to have something lighter and more compact for when you need a break.

You will really enjoy the 60-250. It also plays well with the HD 1.4x teleconverter and the AFA 1.7x converter. Advice to keep your 55-300 is good as the 60-250 can be a lot to haul at times. However, when you do the pictures you will get are top notch.
enjoy it!

Don't get me wrong, the HD 55-300mm is a very good lens. I have hundreds of keeper shots from it. Where it has let me down is in loosing focus and racking through the range to find focus, causing me to loose shots of whales, for example. I also find I need to shoot at f8 or f9 to get the best detail out of the lens at the tele end of the range. Being able to get sharp images at f5.6 will make a huge difference to my photography. That's the hope anyway

Probably my favourite lens, and my most-used one in summer. You'll love yours.
