$10 vs $1000 or Takumar SMC 55mm F1.8 vs Sony Zeiss FE 55mm F1.8

I bought Takumar SMS 55mm F1.8 for $10 on auction and I decide compare it with my Sony FE 55mm F1.8 for $1000.
They have same lens parameters, but 40 years difference :-)

1) Sony FE 55mm F1.8
2) Takumar SMC 55mm F1.8
3) Pentax A 50mm F1.2

All photos shot at the same values of ISO, aperture and shutter spedd on Manual mode and Manual focus.
Camera Sony A7.
Also you can view original sizes of photos.

F=1.8

F=2.2

F=2.8

F=1.8

F=2.8

very interesting, in photos like these, the difference is the price ^^

according to exif, you didn't expose all three first picture with the same shutter speed. (hence the Tak being a tad darker of 2/3 stop).

The main difference is the AF fonction, auto aperture, and i guess the T value of the lens. Is it worth 990€ probably not, though.

Yes, I made a mistake - different shutter speeds.

The only one I'd pay $1000 for is the Pentax A 1.2, but only because it's out of production and demand drives the price high. (Last I looked on E-bay, I could get two for that price - so maybe one plus a whole lot of really gorgeous Taks). It's nice to know you can still get really good performance at a price that won't rape your wallet to death.

At 1:1, the Sony has slightly smoother bokeh. Sharpness is about the same. The Sony has more purple fringing (but not much still). I can certainly think of ways to enjoy $980 more than the difference between these two lenses. That amount of money would buy a nice trip to go somewhere exotic and shoot photos with your trusty Takumar.

for $1000 I can get the FA77mm 1.8 (or the FA*85mm 1.4) and compare with the zeiss

Hm, from the photos it looks like the Sony is a tad sharper if you look at the spider webs on the flowers. But in terms of bokeh rendering, colours, they are both quite good. The big difference in price, just to get AF.. well, dunno if its worth it. Maybe for some people

Without looking at the exif first, I ended up preferring the Sony. The Tak looks more "muddy" and slightly yellowy.

Nice try though

I saved $990......Wow....now I know why I have three 55mm Takumars !
Sorry.....but the sony lens isn't worth $990 more than the rest.
Stop the Tak down a bit more and get the first aid kit ready !

Only difference I really noticed was in the first set, that the Sony has smoother and less distracting bokeh than both of the Pentaxes.

Differences are mostly subjective - I like the oof rendering (bokeh) on the F1.2 best personally, but that will be a matter of opinion...
Overall the differences for everyday use are pretty minor, and certainly not $1000 difference.
You're making me want to go out and take some of my less used, older glass for a spin...

I guess I'm not very objective about these kind of comparisons - I almost always prefer the pictures taken with the ten buck lens used by a 1000 buck photographer rather than the other way around.

Conclusion: nothing here to lose sleep over.
