is this HSM version actually HSM? i remember reading in another post, that for Pentax the lens might not be HSM. i'm wondering whether or not the lens will work with the K100D.
To my knowledge there is no HSM version of this lens for Pentax, they just show a "generic" picture in the product description for all mounts.

Well I ordered this lens just a few minutes ago, from Adorama! I am exited, can't wait to get it in my hands!

I struggled a long while between the DA* 300 and this one, but the versatility of a zoom won in this case and from what I have read, they should be equal in image quality in any practical sense.

I think I can thank this forum and Helen to have this lens in my hands right now! It arrived to Helsinki already yesterday, but I got it today after the customs clearance.

I went out right after work to take the first photos. Exciting, I like this lens!

Here are some test photos;

100mm f11 + 100% crop

300mm f6.7 + 100% crop:

The following are all full f4.0:

100mm + 100% crop

300mm + 100% crop

TC 1.4 x 300mm + 100% crop

Some early notes:
I am not sure if it is the weather today, but this lens seems to render somewhat colder colours than for example my other lenses, not a problem though.
The CA control seems very good!

Looking at my previous crops, I started to doubt the sharpness, so took my tripod and tested again:

100% center crop

100% corner crop

To me, looks good...

That sure got to you fast! Looks like a good lens. There were some problems early on, with the pre-DG versions. Having to do with front focus/back focus issues. I'd say that you have an excellent lens.

Are you using a Sigma teleconverter? There will not be any discernible image degradation with the Sigma EX converters.

Congratulations!

Thanks, I used the only TC I have, Tamron 1.4 MC4. Seems to work okay, but occasionally hunts a little in low contrast or dim light.. Sigma might have a better IQ, maybe, don't have a chance to compare..

I've noticed this with my Sigma 70-300mm APO, independently of the weather I also have an older 24mm Sigma Super-Wide II, but the colour with that one seems fine.

nice photos Gawan, my friend suggested that this was a really good lens and plus it is very very highly rated on photozone. i was just thinking about this lens and wondering if i should get this or wait for the mythical Pentax 60-250.

This lens is gettting a little attention and rightfully so.
I just wish Pentax would do something with there production of lenses. I don't know much about the merger or where Pentax stands as a competitor with Canon or Nikon but I would think that with the release of the K10d and K20d that maybe they are getting a bit more attention.
I just love my K10d and I don't care what anyone says I don't think you can get any better for the money. I was a little skeptical at first second guessing myself because Canon and Nikon get so strong reviews but I wouldn't think twice about the purchase again.
I am new to the slr thing and have much to learn but the K10d takes you straight to the semi-pro level with ease and it is so user friendly.

Sorry about the thread drift cause this is suppose to be about the lens. I'm just glad to have such a wonderful camera to mount this great lens on. I'm sure all the K100d, K20d and so on will say the same.

Gawan, I ordered it from Adorama it was shipped the same day UPS It got to Milwaukee and it sat there all weekend and Mon. I expect it on Tues.

I saw your pictures and a few others. That was a tipping point. I also like the fact it is a faster lens than some other zooms. I can not always depend on the sun.

When I fill up the piggy bank again I intend to get a TC. Which one ? Not known yet.

Sigma 1.4x TC might be your only practical choice, as Tamron TC is out sold. but Sigma should be one of the best choices to this lens anyway, only you cannot use it in many non-Sigma lenses.

How do you like the Sigma so far, quite heavy isn't it I am still getting to know this lens properly something else than anything I had previously... but the more I used it the more I like it.

No... But maybe there are taxes for importing to Finland
Take that into consideration.
