Tamron 70-210mm f/3.8-4 vs Pentax M 80-200 f/4.5?

Hi all,
in a few weeks' time I might have a chance of acquiring a Tamron 70-210mm f/3.8-4 with adaptall ring (PK only I suppose) for a fair price.
I already have the Pentax M 80-200 f/4.5 version I - which I quite like except for the purple fringing, which can be really terrible at times.
How do the two compare? Is it worth it (apart from the obvious: "it's one more lens, so it's always worth it! ")?
Thanks in advance.

I dont't have a pentax 80-200mm but I do I have all 3 of the tamron adaptall consumer zooms: 03A 80-210mm; 103A 80-210mm, 46A 70-210mm. The first two are classic metal and glass, the 46A has a plastic focus sleeve but IMO still has a good solid feel.

Optically, IMO, tamron did improve the lens with each new version. 103A has lots of good rep - see the reviews here - but I've always found it unimpressive for longer distance pics, it still suffers from fringing and the colours are warm which is good for some things but not so good for others. 46A has at least equal resolution, truer colours, least fringing of the three and better contrast.

All these lenses are in the cheap as chips category on the s/h market, say $10 bucks for a 03A/103A, 46A worth a bit more, bit less common. Plenty of bang for your bucks.

I took this pic (crop) last year on my lumix G1 at 210mm (=420mm) I was doing some comparison pics against the welll regarded kiron zoomlock 70-210mm f4. Resolution wise little to choose between the two lenses.

I had the 3.8-4/70-210 myself.
It halso has been tested by german 'fotomagazin' in 1987 (IIRC).
A bit low contrast wide opened (espp. toward the corners) but improving fast when stopped down 1 f-stop.
Sharpness quite good.
Prone to flare and therefore shade should be used.
Min focus distance only 0.9 m - and therefore I used it primaly for portraits which turned out to be very good. This touch of softness towards the corners, bokeh quite soft.
According to later tests from fotomagazin it's better than the following 4-5.6/70-210 compact sized telezoom from Tamron.
On dslr contrast can be changed in post-processing.

According to my experiences it's hardly to get for only 10 but for 20 - 30/35. Without adaptor....
