I have the 77 and the A 85 and IQ-wise the 85 is at least matches the 77 (IMHO). The beauty of the 77 is it's IQ is great AND it's so compact, which drives me to grab it 9 times out of 10. The 85's are already much larger lenses without hoods. Add a hood....

exactly, I prefer the compactness over a huge, heavy beast ^^ and the IQ of FA 77 is out of the question

Given the FF is on its way.....
I say go for it.. They are my favorite lenses in the drawer and I shoot them on both APS-C (K-5) and film... One of my biggest curiosities is how well the upcoming FF is going to perform in crop mode... FA31 is my favorite of the three amigos but that's mostly because I've used it mostly on APS-C where it's my favorite focal length/fov... I would/will love to be able to easily/quickly switch back and forth and if that works well enough I can imagine this lens hardly ever leaving my camera. If crop mode isn't the call, then FA43 will see a lot of air time when I want that fov, so it's a win/win...

If you like primes and you have the funds, sure, get them.

I don't have the 77, but of the primes I do have the top 3 would be
FA43
DFA100
DA15
while I would have problems ranking this lot
DA21, K24, FA28, FA31, CZ50, and DA70.

That is very appealing. I have the A* 85 1.4 and it is a monster. Add to that the fact I have trouble with manual focus and... well... the 77 seems like a no brainer. But then again I have a DA 70 that is astonishingly good and no plans for a FF camera besides my PZ-1.

Go for it. If you work with auto-focus lenses they are all are terrific options.

If you prefer to work with manual focus lenses there are other options that are at least as good, and usually cost less.

Somehow, given the selection of primes that Canon and Nikon offer, plus the complete Sigma Art line, I doubt the users of other brands are particularly envious, regardless of how good the 'amigos' might be.
Depend if your objective is to go around with quite heavy and obtrusive gear or not.

Some years ago I asked me the same question.
I Think 31/43/77 are too close focals to cover many subjects.
My personal choice Was :
FA 20 2.8
FA 50 2.8 macro
FA 135 2.8
F* 300 4.5
All of them are excellent. I am very proud of my bag

i'd say ignorant more than envious, because canikons have never seen these lenses on a real ff camera... film sucks, it's weak sauce, where the fa31 shines is on the a7* cameras.

i think that pentaxians who know what good glass is, will see these lenses on the new ff pentax, and it's going to drive the price up because a lot of the other glass that they'll be putting on that 42mp(?) camera is going to fall waaay short.

i saw that with the a7r.

canikon has a complete selection of primes, but they don't always get it right... the new nikon 28/1.8, for example, that people have been raving about, from the photographylife review:

"During the extensive lab testing process, I discovered that the Nikon 28mm f/1.8G suffers from several optical problems. It has pronounced focus shift, as noted earlier in this review (clearly visible at f/4 and f/5.6 apertures)... However, what worsens the focus shift problem on the Nikon 28mm f/1.8G is pronounced, dougnut-shaped field curvature that is clearly visible when photographing a flat surface. I tested three samples of the Nikon 28mm f/1.8G and all three showed these optical problems. So at this point, I strongly believe it is an optical design issue with the 28mm f/1.8G, not a sample variance."

I have the FA77/1.9 & the K85/1.8 and I like the K85 better overall. Also I find the 85mm focal length on FF is better suited for portraits.

Since I do landscapes predominantly.....All are SMC-K's .....24mm 3.5 , 35mm 3.5 , 55mm 1.8.........Then The SMC-A's ..... 24mm 2.8 , 35mm 2.8 , and 50mm 1.7
That's my 3 Amigos..... times Two ! They are ALL quite sharp and don't feel Im lacking a thing image wise.
I never had the 85mm in anything and sold both my SMC 1.2's as I just had no use for them and the Cash looked a lot better !

Ah K Series "Three Queens" or "Three Amigos" kits, even more fun than the FA's:

K28/2, K50/1.2 & K85/1.8, that's my K Series "three Amigos" kit on film.

The K 200 2.5 is missing from your "Amigo's". It's such a fantastic lens to use. It's my ONLY K lens
