Could new m42 screw mount lenses be commercially viable?

I just thought about this. What if a small company wanted to release new lenses at a cheaper price through the m42 mount and sell well made adapters for each brand? Kind of like a cheap adaptall solution.

Some do. There are newish Zeiss lenses in m42 -- they don't get better than that. Some of the kickstarter projects we've seen bringing back old lens designs have m42 mounts. Those Chinese macro lenses from Venus also. They're out there, but they always come in normal Canon and Nikon mounts as well. The problem is Nikon is one of the big two, and they can't use m42s without an optical correcting adapter. So a T2 mount would be more universal actually, but haven't seen any of those on a new lens that I can think of. (Possibly there are still new cheap mirror lenses or telescopes that use a T-mount.)

Yah my dad has a mirror lens telescope that uses a t-mount.

If I recall correctly, Cosina, under the Voigtlander banner, a few years ago did make some M42 lenses, as well as an M42 camera. It was all short lived.

And also under the Zeiss name as the ZS series. Both the 25/2.8 and 35/2 are still available new by special order through B&H.
