Has anyone had both the A 35-70 f4 and the A 35-105 f3.5? Is the 35-70 even in the same ballpark? I ask because the 35-105 is a fantastic lens, but the 35-70 is half the price and focuses closer.

Edit: Ok I asked because I had the chance to buy an A 35-70 f4 for a good price (25 dollars). But I decided I'll just wait and save up a bit more in my lens fund, and get me a 35-105.

For $25 I'd get the 35-70/4 in heartbeat. The 35-105 is pretty big for toting around.

The OP was asking about the "F 35-70mm," so are you sure you mean the "A 35-70mm".... or the "F" version?

This thread has taken many turns... we've discussed all kinds of 35-70s...

The problem is that I haven't been as impressed with pictures from the A 35-70 as I am with the 35-105... Who knows, maybe I'll still decide to get the 35-70.

The A 35-70/4 is a nifty but unpretentious little lens with a surprisingly good "macro" function (and, if it's a good copy, $25 would be a good price). The A 35-105/3.5 is (except for its "macro" function) in a different (higher) league. Not just in zoom range (obviously) but in IQ is it greater than the A 35-70/4 -- it is a most impressive zoom. [The A 35-70/4 in no "Poor Man's A 35-105/3.5.]

The A 35-70/4 is very compact and also quite light -- it's really a simple, lightweight design that just works very well -- so it is nice to tote around. OTOH, the A 35-105/3.5 has a lot of very nice glass, and so it is larger and heavier, but I myself really don't think of it as either too big or too heavy to tote around. [You ought to try lugging around the 35-105's big brother, the A 28-135/4, for a little while, if you want to experience big or heavy - LOL.]

I think F35-70mm is underratted by many including me. My copy is sharp, and it has been an image saver so many times. I just keep forgetting how great that lens is. I paid the price at Metropolitan museum when I forgot to change my 21mm ltd on F35-70mm to get sharp macro jewelry pictures with details non macro lens does not deliver. I guess I have to go back there now with that lens.

Certainly there's nothing wrong with my copy.

The lens is also not very prone to flare and CA/PF, even when shooting without hood (as I did in the photos below). Gotta love SMC!

I love mine. Inexpensive, very small, good zoom range, great little macro option, provides very good photographs and I am not afraid of packing it around with me. If it ever does break it won't cost a fortune to replace.

Based on what I read here and other places I know that there are many great and wonderful amateurs who can handhold their top of the line, 100lpm lenses and get awesome photographs. A Keeper every other shot.

However, based on my own personal experience, which is of course applicable only the a few of us 60 year old men, without a tripod I seem only as good as my little F35-70 or M50/2.

...and even then only on film.
