Is it just me or is the F 35-70 an insanely over rated lens?

I was shooting with it today and the shots don't feel any better than my 18-55 v1. In fact I'd argue that at 35 the 18-55 is actually better...

It's probably a little overrated but as it covers normal to short tele focal lengths, it should be able to bring out a bit more detail than the standard kit lens.

I suppose, the extra reach was certainly useful occasionally.

Certainly possible, you can be the judge.

Also I'm not saying this is a bad lens. I just don't get why people say this lens is leagues ahead of the 18-55 when in reality it isn't.
I wouldn't consider this for a replacement of the 18-55 unless you needed the extra reach and didn't need anything wider...

For the going price of this lens I'd just save my money and get a damn 16-45.

I have this and the 16-45 - Obviously the 35-70 has more reach and is nice for two lens travel set up with a useful overlap. The small size is handy as well and both have the close focusing feature. The35-70 has good contrast and gives an older look to the images. Still useful for me and good at the price usually asked.

I find my 18-55 to be at its best at about 35mm. I tend to agree with your assessment and don't find my 35-70 to be markedly better. Smaller and longer focal length though. I sometimes will use it with a wide prime (15 or 21) as a 2 lens kit. It is no match for a 35, 40, 50 or 70, but it is convenient.

I like using the F 35-70, and it is a 'good enough' lens for me. It cannot, however, beat my 35mm or 50mm primes. It does a bit better than my DA 18-135 in the range and is noticeably better than my DAL 18-55. I use the F35-70 for what it's good for: small, convenient range, nice colors, and 'good enough' IQ.

I don't get this statement; the 35-70 is usually about $50, the 16-45 closer to $200. Might as well save for a 50-135, really. ;-)

I find the 35-70 performs best close up, including its "macro" range. Given good performance there, and with its small price, I wouldn't call it "overrated". But if you were expecting something like a Limited prime it might not live up.

Cheers!

I see plenty of 16-45s go for 120-140 dollars.

Ok, I haven't priced them in a while and lens prices do seem kinda low right now. But they are also pretty different lenses by zoom range and by size. I don't know, the 18-55 can do pretty well in its sweet spot as well, so your comparison at 35mm does sound reasonable. Here's a sample shot I pulled from the lens sample thread for the 35-70:

To me, that looks pretty good for $50. But I may have a good copy, or it may do well on my body.

i had one. it was better than most of the consumer grade zooms. it was slow and short, but acceptable sharpness for internet stuff. this was back when my only camera was an ist DS so the AF was pretty much useless. i sold it as i did better with MF stuff.

The IQ of mine is quite good although it's now broken and only works at 70mm so its main use now is to keep dust out of an old film body that I don't have a body cap for. I never found much to complain about the 18-55 kit lens either although I liked having the extra reach to 70mm as a walk around. I now have a Sigma 17-70C which is better than both of them. As for being over rated, I think the F 35-70 is a great deal for the price. I paid around $40 for mine if I remember and I got a couple of good years before the zoom mechanism broke. My biggest gripe is the poor build quality but mine probably saw many years of use before I owned it. Its compact and light to carry, has a very good close up/macro range, and takes 49mm filters, of which I already had several. I've seriously kicked around buying another one.
