A few questions if you don't mind.

Hello, I have an old Samsung GX1L. I have for it the 18-55mm kit lens, as well as two Tokina lenses; 100-300mm and 28-80mm. I am looking into getting a Pentax K-50, and from what I understand my current lenses will work with the new camera. The Kit I am currently looking at has a 18-55mm WR and a 50-200mm WR. The question that really stands out is; Is getting the WR lenses worth it? I live in Oregon currently where it tends to rain, we also like to go to the beach and travel around. It seems to make sense to me. Of course I would keep the 3 that I currently have.

Another question I have is that I heard that the two Tokina lenses that they made from Samsung are also WR, I was wondering if this had any truth to it. If so, would it be better to get the 18-135mm WR as a good walk around lens, or stick with what I have in mind, or even go for a prime lens instead?

My shooting style is currently varied as I am still just a fledgling but I still know and understand several things about DSLR.

Thanks a lot for any information you have.

Get the 18-135 over those two IMO. While your lenses are NOT sealed, you could use the 100-300 to cover the longer range. And you could sell your current 18-55 and 28-80 to make up for a bit of the cost.

Your Samsung is a re-badged Pentax *ist DL2, so it will function with all K-mount lenses.

Having some WR gear is always a good idea, and the K-50 kit certainly fits the bill. You will find the new body to be a quantum leap forward in features and image quality. The DA18-135WR is an excellent consumer zoom and would probably be a better choice than the two zoom kit.

If the Tokina lenses are weather sealed they will probably say so somewhere, and would need to have a rubber o-ring around the periphery of the mounting plate.

+1 for the 18-135. I use one as my walk-around WR lens. It's not as sharp as the high-end lenses, but it's sharper than the 18-55, and similar to the 50-200 where it counts. Your next buy will be to get a DA55-300 to replace the Tokina 100-300. If you get the DAL version used here on the forum, it's quite reasonable, but not WR. I pretty much only use my 18-135 when it rains, so not much lost there for me. I find that if the weather is bad, 300mm is too far away to shoot through the mist anyway.

I lived in Florida, and would take the 18-135 out during tropical storms and hurricanes and such. WR really means you can shoot in about any weather without fear.

The 18-135 is IIRC a DC lens without screw drive. Will an istD type camera even support the AF?

If OP is getting the K-50, your question is redundant.

True, but he needs to know that if the K-50 goes down or requires service, he won't be able to use the 18-135 to its full capabilities on his old Samsung. (He hasn't told us he's getting rid of it, so I assume for now that it will serve as a backup body.)

Sounds like the 18-135mm is the way to go. From what I am reading it's a lot quieter too. That's good to know actually. I may keep the old camera around, I'm not sure yet. But if it stays around for a bit then so are the lenses. From the looks of it the lenses I have don't really sell that well anyway.

It should be interesting for you to compare one camera directly against the other at the same MP setting (I think it can be done) and with the same lens at the same time. I would have done this but my *ist-DL proved unfixable, and its working days did not overlap with those of its successor (K-5).
