Thanks for the critique. I can't really take credit for having the perfect shutter speed, since with the second shot I was more concerned with setting base ISO for DR and aperture for depth of field, and letting the shutter speed fall wherever it needed to satisfy the other two exposure variables, and for the third shot, I merely wanted something fast enough for hand holding, as I was using my tripod with another camera/lens combo. So if the falling water is perfect in one shot and not so much in the other — it was all an accident! Incidentally, shutter speed for the second shot (Lower Yosemite Falls) was 1/50; shutter speed for the third shot (Horsetail Falls) was 1/60.

Here's another 16-85 shot taken the day before the Yosemite Valley pics, from Zion Canyon:
Gerg, as you happen to be a fan of Ansel Adams, I wonder what this would look like in B/W. Great shot by the way. TFS Cliff

The problem with B+W is the leafless trees tend to blend into the background. For that reason it's an image that needs color.

One more from Zion:

I am away from home for 10 weeks so do not have access to my laptop and Capture One which I generally use for PP.I can carry out limited work on my IPad using Photogene4.I have posted an example and would welcome any comments on whether it is worth posting on the hoof or leave it until I am home.Obviously in the example below I would hope to recover some of the blown highlights in the clouds which wasn't possible on the IPad.

I'm so so tempted to get the 16-85 as a travel lens.

But... i have a 16-50... And i've read alot of the posts on "16-50 vs 16-85" debate.

Based on my needs, I can summarise and distill my thoughts on what I've read so far as follows:-

1. the 50-85 range does provide greater versatility & convenience especially when travelling (used to have the 18-135, loved the range, got nervous about IQ; sold it!);
2. the constant 2.8 though provides for better "bokeh moments" & is there in the most dire low light moments (though I must admit i am usually coy to use it at 2.8 as it doesn't produce confidence inspiring IQ);
3.Weight and size isn't much of a consideration for me cos i'm pretty darned used to the 16-50 on my K3.

So I know what the trade-offs are. That part is apparent and I just need to weigh those considerations with my shooting style.

But if I do want to get the 16-85 after taking the above into consideration, it still leaves me one question which I think the users here can best help me answer:

Are there significant differences in IQ between these 2 lenses at their corresponding focal lengths and apertures?

I hope the users here can enlighten me and help me make a decision.

GSiGuy,
I don't have the 16-50 so you may need help from someone that has shot with both...
...but, I really like the IQ of my 16-85. See the P-51D mustang photo above! It is my favorite lens right now and even though I fell and it hit a rock, it still take sharp photos!
The extra reach of 85mm is great. No, it is not a fast lens as far as aperture, but a camera like the K-3 does great at higher ISO anyway.

Good luck

Thanks, Lloyd! Yes, the picture of the P-51 Mustang certainly has bags of detail!

I think my decision is going to boil down to whether I truly need the extra 50-85mm range, more than anything else. Time to run my pics through one of those programs that charts the focal length of the shots you take...

On the K-5 at the Baltimore Herb Festival. Certainly can't complain about the bokeh.

Just saw this thread. I did a "Single In ___" back in November 2015 with this lens. Many results here.
