I use a k3 every day on the job at a bodyshop photographing wrecked cars and the specific damages to them and a lot of documents. 100 pics a day is not uncommon. Usually in really crappy light. I have to use a polarizer too, which makes it worse. Lots of handheld at 1/100 and less. I've been using 18-135, which is okay, but is zoom creeping really bad. Very frustrating. Also document sharpness leaves a lot to be desired. And I could certainly use a little more width.
How is the long term performance of the 16-85? How bad are the shadows with the onboard flash with the bigger lens? Is it that much sharper?
In other words, talk me into spending $600 on a lens that will get beat up and used everyday in harsh environments.

My copy of the lens has held up well over the seven years I've owned, but then I don't use it every day—not even close. It's reputed as sharper (mainly toward the edges) and a bit contrastier than the DA 18-135, but I have no first hand experience with that lens. If it were possible to do your work with a prime lens, that would be an option I would explore.

I have several old primes I use for fun, but really need a zoom for what I do. Definitely need a digital era lens for aperture and metering to get me close. The auto focus is actually a hindrance and I shoot almost all manual mode. These photos are important, so I can get insurance Co's on board for what I am seeing since they won't send actual people out to look at damages anymore.

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but my picture might be worth a thousand dollars.

I've tried point and shoot cameras, but they never last more than a couple of months and I have to have manual focus. Cell phones are a joke and impractical from a work flow perspective.

My Pentax bodies (k20 I gave to my daughter and the k3) have been like a hammer; the toughest tool for the job, always work, have never let me down for 10 years. This 18-135 though has been making life a bit difficult lately. It still works, but will probably be a hand me down to my daughter pretty soon.
