Sigma 18-50 or 24-60? Need help fast! :)

Hello everyone!

I want to upgrade from the 18-55 mm kit lens and considered buying Sigma 18-50 or 24-60. The thing is, I don't know which one to buy. In the other forum, they told that 18-50 is better, because it's made specially for digital cameras. What do you think? My camera is K10D.

Thank you!

P.S. I need advice fast beacause i'm going to buy it on Ebay.

What other lenses do you have or are planing to buy? That would be one of the key deciding factors.

How about cover the whole range with the new DA17-70mm coming out. But I have to say that a lens made specifically for digital cameras is hardly credibility enough to say that alone makes it better than any other lens. I am sure that any FA owner will attest to that.

At the moment I only have the 18-55 mm kit lens. I'm planning to buy Sigma 10-20 mm (or something else with about the same angle of view) and a telephoto lens (don't know which one yet, maybe Pentax 55-300). But I think I won't buy them in the near future, maybe in a year's time or so.

I'd still stick to these lenses, because on Ebay they are quite cheap at the moment. I'm on a budget, so I only can choose between these two.

I'd recommend you look into it a bit harder, and skip the quick purchase... chances are you'll find something similar soon on ebay.

a couple of points here.

the 24-60 is a full frame lens. Although it does have digital coatings, being full frame it will be a little heavier. BUT, if you ever want to use it on a film body or pentax comes out with a full frame camera you can.

you say you want an ultra wide, either 10-20, 12-24 or the new tamron 10-24 perhaps. the 24-60 would be a good fit.

On the tele end, it really depends. if you don't do wild life, then the 50-135 is OK, and then yuou could go for the 18-50, but if you want longer and go for a 70-200 then the 24-60 might be a better fit because ther eis less gap between the two lenses.

ALso note 24 is not exceptionally wide, and you will still be using your kit lens until you get the ultra wide.

In fact, you may find it is better to get the ultra wide first, because it gives you something yuou don't have, and then replace the kit lens at a later date.

I guess what I was trying to say was take your time. I'm not vouching for ebay over anywhere else... just make sure you know what you want to a greater degree before spending. There's lot's of info on here, and all over the net for example.

Wow...that's a really good offer, but unfortunately, it doesn't ship to Europe, so too bad.

I think the ebay 18-50mm is the older version, which people had commented not optically as strong as the new EX DC 18-50mm MACRO.

I've seen that auction before, and I was thinking to myself what a bargain too! But yeah, its the older version. I would go for the newer version if I'm you. Anyway.... you decide.

I love my Sigma 24-60. Bought it 'cause it was so cheap. But was very impressed with sharpness and IQ. I use it along side my 50-135. I was looking at getting something starting around 16-18 on the wide end. Tried the Sigma 17-70, Tamron 17-50 and Sigma 18-50, but none were as sharp as the 24-60. It compared very very well with the Tamron 28-75, but at about half the cost, so I got it.

If I were doing the same thing now, today, I'd be tempted to wait until the DA 17-70 comes out to see what kind of lens it turns out to be, but so far the Sigma 24-60 is one of the best quality bargains I've come across. Especially if you want or need constant 2.8.
