Not sure about the MF version of Sigma's 400mm APO, but when Sigma introduced their 300 f4 & 400 f5.6 APO AF lenses, the tests then available tended to rate the IQ of the 300mm a bit higher. I think it's safe to assume that the majority of lenses designed before about 2000 will have lower IQ and higher chromatic aberration than newer counterparts - but there are exceptions. Some older telephotos provide excellent bokeh - - including on what's supposed to be in focus.

I like my K 400mm f/5.6 + Kenko 1.5x TC but I think the best compromise is the Sigma 150-500 Bigmos which works well with the Sigma 1.4x TC. If you can find one that is. I've rented one from CameraLensRentals and LensRentals so if you don't need one full time you could just rent one.

K400 + TC.

Bigmos @ 500mm.

Is your 400mm a manual focus? Are you using the Pentax TC ?

Also....what about an older Sigma 50-500 ?

I'm looking at one for around $600...... should I do that or a manual focus Pentax 400 mm ?
