Wow! Your images have me considering the DA 15 LTD, when I get my wide angle lens!
That night shot is spectacular!

no difference between the two in regards to IQ, HSM affects AF performance but that is pretty much redundant with such wide lenses.

If you answer "no" to any of these questions:
Is having a big lens, without filter threads, with a limited zoom range with (comparably) low flare resistance going to bother you? = Get the 8-16mm.

If you answer is "yes" to any of these questions:
If you want a compact, well built super wide, with a 49mm filter thread and extreme flare resistance? = Get the DA15.
This is a very loaded set of questions, designed to direct the person answering them. Clearly the DA15/4.0 controls YOUR mind.

(I'm sure it's going to control mine too, at some stage... but there are bigger fish for me to fry if I should stumble across them first.)

Personally I think that the physical aspects of these two lenses are more important than optical considerations
Most definitely. I think it's true of lenses in general - though obviously there will always be a place for the specialist monsters in some people's armamentarium. Small, light, WR trumps big, heavy, not, all else being equal. I am still undecided as to the merits of DC over screwdrive.

When it comes to wide-angle lenses, nothing is ever truly equal.

I sold mine last year.

I have the Sigma 10-20 f3.5-4.5 and it really is a fun lens to work with at 10mm end.
If I had the cash I would get the Sigma 8-16
