LBA: Sigma 500mm f/4.5 APO EX

I'd rather have the SMC Pentax-F* 600mm f/4 to complete my collection of F series lenses, but in the meantime this will make do

The bottom of my Pentax K20D with grip does not even reach the table.

I've yet to make some serious test shots, but the first ones came out very sharp. A great step-up from the Bigma!

(BTW, the product shots were made with my trusty K100D Super, fitted with the SMC Pentax-F 28mm f/2.8).

Beautiful and congrats. Since you are from a similar area as Walter we'll expect many great wildlife shots from you this summer. Do you guys know each other?

Thanks Peter (that's also my name). Yes, I know Walter. As a matter of fact: this was Walter's lens, I bought it from him now that he's converted to Canon (not because he wanted to, but because he got an offer from Canon he could not refuse).

I hope Walter still drops in once and awhile. Also that you have as much success with it as he did. You know for sure you got a good one from the shots he posted. I had seriously considered writing him about his gear when I heard he was moving to another system. Glad to see you got it.

BTW my former brother in law spelled it Pieter

Peter,

I thougth about this lens two months ago. I've been using K500/4.5 for two years. So, I wanted to improve my equipment. But, at the end I didn't bought Sigma. I'm still interested in this lens so please share your experience and shots.
Maybe next spring you will sell it to me

regards

I'm not a Peter so i hope I'm allowed in the conversation.

All I can say is that I'm turned on. Never knew that a piece of glass could have that effect on someone.

It's good to see that the same lens that has produced many jaw dropping images will still be around to astound with the results.

Due to lack of time (work!) I could not take the 500mm/4.5 out into the fields. So I played around with it and took this picture of our daughter:

Taken handheld at ISO 200, 1/400s. The distance was about 4 metres. This is one heck of a sharp lens! You don't even notice it was taken with a supertele. I already like it a lot.

I've yet to master the Sigma 500/4.5, but here's what I got tonight. Handheld but it was getting darker... I had to rely on the K20D's SR. No tripod, I was leaning on the car. 1/200s, f/6.3, ISO 400. This is a crop of 75% of the original.

Some more handheld shots with this beast until I have received my new tripod head. Really nothing important, just trying...
