Pentax M 300 f/4 question

Did Pentax have 2 different M 300mm f/4 lenses? I've seen pictures of the M* and another version that appears to be a M (non-star) that has a smaller front lens diameter. Also, looking at the lens review section of PF, it has the nomenclature M but the supersized pic shows a M*.

Are there 2 different M 300mm lenses or all M*?

Pentax only made one non-star 300mm lens, the SMC Pentax 300/4 sometimes called but not labeled a K300/4. All of the other 300mm lenses have a star.

The reason I ask is because B&H has what is described as a used M 300MM but it does not look like the M* 300.

Used Pentax Telephoto 300mm f/4 SMCP-M Lens B&H Photo Video

same here - looks just like my K 300; websites usually use stock photos rather than photos of the actual lense....

The B&H pic shows the lens is marked "PENTAX 1:4/300" which is the way the earlier K series lenses were marked. Apparently this was changed to "PENTAX 1:4 300mm" after the M series lenses came out. This lens continued in production alongside the Pentax-M* 300. Both are shown in a Pentax catalogue I have from the days when I bought my MX and dreamed of owning more lenses. Nothing much wrong with it optically, but this B&H offering looks to be priced a bit above market for the earlier K300.

Ask for some more info. If it is the wrong pic and it really is the M* it could be a good buy.

There was a K 300mm F4, and an M* 300mm F4 with a different optical design. Check the lens database.

I remember a few people buying a lens labeled an M300/4 and hoping it was a cheap M*300/4. One also from a well-known used retailer, assuming that they wouldn't call it an M without a reason. It always turns out to be the SMC Pentax version. It's like buying a $20 Pentax-A 50mm f1.2 - just one missing dot!

Thanks all. It looked like too good of a deal for a M*.

So, the search continues.

If the OP is actually interested in a K300, I might consider unloading mine using the Forum Marketplace. I'm about "this far" from pulling the trigger on one of the new zooms and the couple hundred bucks would help.

I did the exact same search earlier this year and I'm pretty sure I ran across the same mislabeled 300/4. I think we're at the stage where the older lenses are starting to get 'old' enough that younger store employees can't tell the difference between them.
I eventually found an m* 300/4 as part of a kit of gear and bought the whole kit just to get the lens. It's been well worth it.
