If you don't need the 'A' setting the K28/3.5 is excellent and not very expensive.

I think it's fair to conclude that this is not an isolated problem and that, even though my copy could be worse than some, the best exhibit also poor performance.
Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for the tip but I often use TAv and sometimes AV as well.

Has the lens been worked on? In a Yahoo lens group one person had a similar problem with a Kiron lens. He partially stripped the lens down and it turns out one of the elements was put in the wrong way round. After the problem was corrected the lens performed up to the standards for the lens.

coming from a Zeiss 28mm I guess nearly every other 28mm lens will disappoint....

I have the A 2.8/28 too.
I sold my old one years ago and bought one once again.
At 2.8 there is corner fall-off - but when stopped down (at 4 or 5.6) IQ increased and I had no zoom-lens that outperformed this A 2.8/28 at 5.6 - Tokina AT-X 2.6-2.8/28-70 neither.

Give it a stern talking-to. If it won't listen, send it to me for reform.

The best options for 28mm in Pentax land is probably the Pentax 18-135, and that presents all kinds of problems for street photography. Looks like you're out of luck. Personally, I'd use my 21 on a K-3 and crop or for street photography, maybe even my K-01)... I'm not sure how having to crop is an issue on street photography, but then, it's not something I do, so it's not like I've got it all figured out.

This is my third DA21mm; I keep forgetting that it's field of view doesn't doesn't work for me.
I really like Pentax bodies but I won't be using one again until they make a lens that suits my needs
My K-5IIs was shipped to it's new owner this morning with the A2.8/28mm included as a free bonus...

I guess we won't hold our breath waiting for you to come back/ Just one of those small company realities. They don't make something for everyone.

Yes, Ricoh will probably invest most of it's efforts in devoloping the FF system but that's not where I'm heading.
I used an E-M5 for a few months this year and, even though I didn't really get along with the EVF, I got irrevocably accustomed to the smallness and lightness of both body and 1.7/20mm lens.
Presently torn between the 100d+24mm and the X-T1+27mm,

Thanks to all for your replies.

I shot the following JPEG/sRGB samples with a k-5IIs mounted on a tripod in manual mode at 100 ISO, self-timer and SR off.
I left "Using the Aperture Ring" off because I have no intention to set f/ stop on the lens.
i'm a bit late to the party, but for future reference, the problem with shooting brick walls is that the camera sensor needs to be perfectly parallel with the wall... i use bubble levels and even a tape measure sometimes.

if your camera was setup close to that, i'd say that lens was weak on the left side, particularly in the upper left corner... it was probably a defective copy.

i tested a bunch of 28mm legacy primes on the a7r; canon, minolta, konica, olympus, etc., pentax was the winner for me, don't give up on the brand.

the best way that i've found to test for decentering in a lens is to shoot big wide landscapes, with equidistant objects that are located in the flat plane of focus.

This is how I ended up with the Pentax system...
