Tokina 28-200/3.5-5.3

I just got the Tokina 28-200/3.5-5.3 from B&H today. Manual focus auto. I haven't played with it too much yet as I like to get a little work done during business hours, even on days when I get a new lens. From the few test shots I took, it seems to be plenty sharp. The only down side I have found is that it weighs 1.5 pounds.
Does anybody know anything about this lens? I can't find any reviews anywhere. I think it is a left over from quite few years back, but for $169.00 I couldn't pass it up.

Never used this lens, but I have 3 manual focus Tokina 'A' zooms in the 28-70/85mm range, and they are all superb in regards to image quality. The colours and contrast are nice, and they are sharp wide open at all focal lengths. Try shooting a modern (non-DA*) zoom wide open and see what you get

Oh, and the focus rings are like butter; a real joy to turn with just one finger, while the others are on the sturdier zoom ring.

If you don't mind manual focusing, you'll love the IQ of this lens...if it's like mine!

I had this lens. The IQ is good in terms of sharpness, color, and contrast. The downside, in addition to its weight, is that its closest shooting distance is 2.5 m although it does have closing focus function at 200mm end. It also got overexposure on my K10D by 0.7 ~ 1 EV, but it was fine on *ist DS.

Is $169 for a brand new copy? A used one is much cheaper.

I think I have the same lens too (got it off of Henry's Ebay auction for a good price). It's a one-touch push pull design isn't it?

Yes, it weighs a ton, and when fully extended, is ideal for home defense, but it does take nice pictures (used it for my grandmother's birthday, and they turned out great). I mainly use it on my KX, but when I get a focusing screen for the K10D, it'll get some use there too.

Yes, it is a new lens and it is push/pull. The exposure is spot-on and since my two most used lenses (Zeiss 35/2.0, Voigtlander 58/1.4) are also manual focus, that was a non-factor. I took a blind chance at this one and I think it paid off. Miserere, you are right about the modern lenses. With this one I can see a difference between wide open and stoped down a little if I'm specifically looking for it, otherwise I can't tell. As for home defense, well, being as I live in one of the free states I have better options.
