Fair enough. It gets a good rap, being compared to one of the Nikon crown jewels, the Nikkor 14-24mm.

Hands down the 150-600mm. That's 1/3 longer than the 150-450 at about half the price (at least as the Tamron is sold for Canikon, but a rebranded Pentax version would probably be 30~50% more). Of course, with the 1.4X the 150-450 gets to 600mm, but the aperture is small and AF compromised. As to IQ, 150-450 + 1.4X versus 150-600, both at about 600mm, hard to know.

I believe this lens will be a Tamron's rebrand it's already in the roadmap and might be announced shortly ^^ The Tamron 15-30 is a great lens and will make Pentax system stronger ^^

I'll have to take other people's word for the Tamron 15-30's qualities, but in principle I'd be in two minds about doing this.

On the one hand, it's important to get new glass onto the market for the forthcoming 35FF body, and it's probably important to get a number of wide to medium telephoto lenses out first, to play to the format's strengths. Obviously, one way to do this quickly is to repackage (and hopefully improve) existing non-OEM units.

On the other hand, this strategy looks somewhat like what AOC did during Pentax's decline in the late film era, which may leave some buyers wondering about Ricoh's commitment to the brand. Personally, I'm not concerned, as the 150-450 and the 70-200 are proof of the optical design capability within the company, but others may not see it that way.

For them to do the 150-600 would be a tacit admission that they didn't make the D-FA 150-450 long enough in the first place. As this could involve a considerable loss of face, I don't see it happening. On the other hand, a full-frame 15-30 (especially derived from a lens that already has a very good reputation) fills a gap. One merely hopes the price premium is worth it for the Pentax coatings. On the other hand the VR gear can probably be stripped out as unnecessary, so there may be savings there (though whether that's done depends on how well shake-reduction is implemented in the full-frame body).

The only way we see a 150-600 on Pentax is if Sigma makes theirs in K-mount. As long as Pentax's market share is so small that isn't going to happen. They won't lose enough sales to the new Nikon 200-500/5.6 to make a K-mount production run viable.

I had a Sigma 15-30 used on an LX, ZX5n and *ist that I thought gave very satisfactory images. Sigma later introduced a zoom that went to 12mm covering FF that reputation claimed had good IQ, but distortion & vignetting were inevitable problems. Except for the Voigtlander 12mm for rangefinders, I don't think there were any wider rectilinear lenses, SFL or zoom, made for FF.

I think it will be Tamrons 15-30 mm lens. That way, they will have wide to telephoto lenses covered so Pentax could then start working on some much needed new prime lenses and refresh the FA limiteds.

My thought exactly, the trinity must come first : 15-30, 24-70, 70-200. Then they can take their time to release some gorgeous prime lens

I will be interested to see what these are, but at the same time I'm so well set up for full-frame primes right now (for my purposes, at any rate) that I don't think I'll get any new stuff for a while. Hell, I probably won't even be looking at getting the FF body until 2017 at least. We live in exciting times, that's for sure, but they're also going to be expensive times, and the lucky ones will be the existing users who can adapt their optics to the new body and roll on for a while until the FF roadmap is complete and the new glass is in the field and working.

Assuming that the upcoming FF wide zoom is a Tamron design, as is the new 24-70, then it points to a closer relationship between Ricoh and Tamron. The contracts for the rebadges might prevent Tamron from releasing more k-mount lenses under the Tamron badge.

I can imagine a deal by which Ricoh get first option on any new Tamron development, inasmuch as they could call dibs on collaboration if it works well within their intentions but give Tamron a pass to proceed on their own if Ricoh don't feel the need for it.

The big thing that's changed since the film days is that instead of servicing three K-mount camera manufacturers, Tamron are only servicing one (or two, if you count the Samsung K-mount DSLR users). In this context, being obliged to offer all their K-mount lenses directly to Pentax for a rebrand isn't such a bad thing as there's effectively no other market for them. They once might have said "No, Pentax; we want the option to sell under our own name to Ricoh and Chinon and Sears", but not any more because Ricoh now IS Pentax, Chinon are no longer with us, and Sears are no longer selling rebranded K-mount cameras (most of which were Ricoh or Chinon anyway).
