DFA 150-450 + 1.4 TC? How does it do?

I've been thinking about it and my Sigma 150-500 falls off on the extreme long end, and though I can get it to AF with the 1.4 AW tc I want to find out how the 140-450 does with it. How sharp is it? How easy is the AF? How much of an improvement will I see if I get it and sell my 150-500? Thanks for your responses.

Can I piggy back on this thread if you don't mind. In addition to the above, how does the combo do with birds in flight? I have seen plenty of birds perched on trees, standing still etc, but not many in flight. I have also seen airshows, but honestly that isn't much of a test either.

Good questions !
Looking forward to some replies too.
I am not really impressed with the HD 1.4X TC .... I am hoping that the 140-450 lens would do better (with the TC) than with my DA*300/4, but that seems like wishful thinking.

There have been quite a few discussions about the 150-450 lens but not much said when used with the HD 1.4X TC, at the long end that is.
Too lazy to look them up !!

I'm looking for better, there just isn't a lot of 150-450 images.

DFA 150-450 plus TC....
630mm @ ƒ8

Maybe a 150-600 would be better, but, the 150-450 is in the ball park.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/299352-k3ii...-wildlife.html

After going through the images in the DFA 150-450, most of which are very sharp, I can't think of a reason why this lens wouldn't work with a 1.4 TC.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/122-lens-clubs/294721-post-your-hd-pentax...ctures-24.html

I'd love to see a thread on the 150-600 that's as good. But, this was a bit of work, I've done my fair share, someone else is going to have to pick up the slack. I've done the work on helens I'm interested in, if someone else thinks the 150-600 is a better deal, have at her. I'm really interested in if the 150-600s are ƒ5.6 at 450mm.

A few more 150-450 with 1.4 TC from Mike.P®

And one without the TC....

The TC doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to IQ, and definitely doesn't to auto-focus speed or anything line that. As far as i know from reports the ring motor in the 150-450 is faster than SDM, if that's what you are asking.

Thanks Normhead, for your extra efforts. Much appreciated. I was also under the impression that most of the early adopters "fear" a bit to show their results with the new 150-450. Maybe they think they cannot hold up to the expectations of "the crowd". Meanwhile I scanned through most of the public threads and reviews on the web and am pretty sure now that my first online order was an exception to the rule. Attached to my K-3II it was not entirely as sharp as "promised" and when comparing it with the Bigma (50-500 HSM) that I still own I could not detect any advantage to stick with the newer an bulkier zoom of Pentax. Furthermore being disappointed with first glance checks I did not want to send the device in to adjust the optical technics. So, I sent it back. Today (right now) I decided to try it once more... I don't see any step forward for myself in changing over to another brand (e.g. Canon 6D or Nikon D750 + Tammy 150-600) but investing in my gear plus learning more how to tweak the most out current system. I will load my shots to flickr when available. Talk to you then...

I guess it's time I bought a HD 1.4..... anyway...... I put my Kenko 1.4 on the DFA 150-450 today and went down to the easiest place around here to shoot some wild life. Unfortunately I don't know if this will help much as the TC wont allow auto focus or anything really. So TAv mode, no SR.....etc.....1/500 and F8-10... let Iso float. Just waiting for the wife to get off the iMac to see if anything is worth posting.

Some Kenko 1.4 TC shots..... all manual focus...with monopod no SR.... I think I need to buy the HD 1.4....

My 150-450 arrived... first shots are taken...have a look: https://www.flickr.com/photos/avifuzzi/ .
1st impressions:
It's fast (enough) and accurat when auto-focussing with my K-3II.
Sharpness is better vs my 50-500 HSM - only wide open a bit soft at the long end, but that is what I expected.
Sweet spot for long distance shots seems to be at F7,1 and that is sufficient for a brighter day.
That's it for this weekend.
