The Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.0 is a wonderful compromise of IQ vs range, to put up another possibility.

I gave up zooms some 5yrs back and never looked back.
A small bag of 2-3 lenses (sometimes even 1 lens) covers whatever I'd expect for a day out either myself of with family.

This is especially so with the small Pentax primes, which other DSLR makers just don't match in the size of them.

For example, a DA15ltd; FA35; FA77 is no bigger than any 18-75/f2.8 option (I made it up since there is none and the Tamron 28-75/2.8 is bigger)

The modularity of the primes is also an advantage such that if I know its a shopping trip with the family and I don't need the other lenses, I just bring just one lens out for the off chance that I need to take a shot.
