A day with the primes

Today I did a first (for me), I went on a hike without my zoom lenses bringing two small primes (Macro 28mm f2.8 and 50mm F2.0).
I am amazed at how much I enjoyed using these primes and not a zoom lens!
It was a pleasant experience, not having to zoom only choice between 28mm and 50mm. I had the 28mm on my camera most of the time as I enjoy taking macro shots, but used the 50mm a couple times.
I brought these primes as the bag I was taking on the hike had room for one zoom lens or two primes and I wanted to take my 28mm...

I am going to feed my LBA with more primes from now on... and maybe the Bigma (50-500) when budget allows...

PS The lenses I brought are these: 50mm Auto Sears 2.0 and CPC Phase 2 28mm Macro

Sounds like a great time. Though my zooms give me a lot of flexibility, I love taking just one prime out on a walk and seeing what comes my way. Good for you!

When I'm alone and no one is waiting for me, I usually use the primes. When I'm with the family and kids, the zoom is more convenient.

About 4 y ago, I took my A 28/2.8 out for family fall photos, and used it on my *list DS, and received fantastic results.

Glad to hear you're getting along great with primes. With your zooms, do you often use the whole range, or are you finding you're at one end or the other most of the time?

A prime user

You can identify a real prime user out in the wild by watching how he uses a zoom lens. The real zoom user fiddles around with the lens when he wants to change the focal length or adjust the framing of the subject in the view finder, but the confirmed prime user keeps the zoom lens on one focal length and just zooms with his feet. That is what I keep finding myself doing when using my lovely FA 24-90.

I like the FA 24-90 because it allows me to use any one of my three favorite prime focal lengths--31 mm, 43 mm, and 77 mm.

When I use my 18-55 I use most of the range. When I use my 50-200 I use more the 200 end (and shorter when the horse I'm taking photos of charges right up to me (then I change lenses quickly as 50mm is too long a focal length...))

This exactly - it's why the 18-250 was the primary lens for our recent family holiday, with the DA 50 reserved for when I knew we were going into low light. I took a just-bought (used) 28mm Takumar one one occasion and regretted it, because that was the day I REALLY needed the long zoom for just one unpredictable but very exciting thing. I still got a picture of it, but it wasn't as good as if I'd had the superzoom.

Clearly you need the 18-270...

I want a longer FL of at least 400mm...
Hence my wanting of the 50-500... (150-450 a bit over budget...) and the 1.4 TC
