The manual focus ring might be a little tighter ... but that might just be because it is brand new and my original copy has now been used several times. I will probably end up keeping the original.
It does seem like this might be a... "feature"... of the 16-85. So long as you're happy with the image quality across the frame, and it doesn't inconvenience you when shooting, I don't think it's anything to worry about. Honestly, I miss having mine - the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 I got in its place is a fantastic lens, but I really liked the fact that the 16-85 is WR, and it would have made an excellent poor weather kit with the 55-300 WR...
