The real question is - would you be prepared to pay a premium for lens selected to be 'near perfect' ? If so then the manufacturers are missing a sales trick. Of course it would mean admitting that they are presently selling less than perfect lenses.

some people just buy things to look at 'em, then return it... there was a guy on dpr who was buying camera gear online and letting it sit on his table, never taking it out of the box, until the 30 day or whatever return limit, at which time he would request an rma and ship it back... still unopened!

so he got banned by amazon or b&h or whoever it was, and he started a thread on dpr, telling people not to shop there, because they provided bad service.

the vendor was eating the return shipping cost, and having to expend resources for restocking or whatever.

the thread got ugly, because he had done it several times, and a couple of people were defending his behavior, lol

Yes, depending on how much the premium was, but I'd assume it would be in the form of a service offered by a retailer or a third-party like lensrentals vs. something offered by the manufacturer.
