FA 50mm f/1.4 vs. 1.7

Hey gang,

I've been getting ready to purchase one of the Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 lenses for $200, but I just saw that I can get a used Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.7 for $120. Wondering if any of you have any experience with the 1.7 lens, and if it's worth it to save the extra $70, or should I just spring for the 1.4? For example, is the build quality and image quality about the same? While the reviews of this lens in the database seem good, there weren't many of them.

Thanks!

Buy it. Sell it on ebay for 200 and then get a f/1.4 for 80 dollars less.

Where is this FA 50mm 1.7. I may just beat you to it! Seriously, there are a couple of E-tailers with this lens listed, but they don't have them in stock. Then they pull the old 'box was mis-labeled' routine. How would they know unless they opened the box? And who the hell opens the factory box before shipping to a customer? Call them up & ask about availability before you go through checkout or they'll have use of your money for a couple of months.

The lenses are actually very similar in build & IQ. The 1.7 has been said to have slightly better resolution down around 2.0 and 2.8, but the 1.4 has a smoother bokeh and overall more pleasing look.

I have the 1.4 in my bag.

I have both, and this is exactly true. The 1.7 is actually my low-light AF 50 now, because it's sharper up to 2 or 2.8 than the 1.4. The 1.4 is just as sharp after 2.8, and it has better bokeh.

If you can find the FA 50 1.7 for under $250, it's worth it. For $120, it's a no-brainer.

I'd go for the 1.7, especially if it's the FA version. I prefer the look better than the F version.

I tested the FA 50mm 1.4 and the F 50mm 1.7 and they don't start to get even in terms of sharpness and contrast until around 2.4 - 2.8. The F 50mm 1.7 is better at 1.7 and at 2.0 than the FA 50mm 1.4, so it's possible that the FA version is better too.

Just wanted to say that I agree about the bokeh of the 50mm 1.4... So it's a matter of what is important to you. Though for $120 I'd take the sharper, more contrasty lens when wide open, over the one with the prettier bokeh...

Then I certainly won't tell you what I paid for mine, or how I got it. Suffice to say that our local CaNikon shop sometimes doesn't know how to price used pentax equipment....

Is FA 50 f/1.7 different from F 50 f/1.7?

1. The lens body is slightly different.
2. The FA lens has a chip that reports lens data to the camera to assist in optimizing the exposure & sharpness for the lens characteristics.
