Sears 1:1.7 Auto kmount lens

I recently (like tonight) acquired a Sears 1:1.7 k-mount lens for my ist DS on ebay, the lens is marked "automatic". Is this lens like an "A" lens from Pentax? Anybody have any information on this lens?

I have a 70-210mm zoom from Sears with the (A) setting, and it seems to work the same as Pentax SMC-A lenses (with my K100D).

A=auto aperature. Just set the aperature ring to A, and the camera will let you change it witht a button instead of the ring........

I believe that all of the older Sears lenses with "automatic" sign on the front do no have an "A" on the aperture ring.

This is a picture of my Sears f/1.4:

This is how it was explained to me (in terms “what makes it an Automatic”):

"Back in the day (before "A" on the aperture ring), and Auto lens was one that would allow you to focus at wide open, but would stop down to take the picture…"

D

that's not an A lens. you'll have to use it just like a K or M lens. shot in manual mode, set the ap ring to the ap you want , compose, hit the AE-L button to get a EV and take the shot.
any example images??

Here are few unprocessed, just downsized:

f1.4
1/40sec
400

f1.4
1/200
400

Its a sharp lens, even at 1.4, the only thing, I feel it lack the contrast.

D

Thanks for all the information. All that I have gotten on this lens indicates the it is not an "A" lens but is the same as a 'K' or 'M'. This doesn't disappoint me as shooting in the manual mode is not something that is new to me! Lastly, I bought the lens cheap enough (off ebay, $20.50), that I can use it as a paper weight if all else fails, ha!!!!

Automatic on these lenses means that the when a shot is taken the aperture automatically closes down before shutter opens.

A Pentax-A compatible lens has an extra 'A' setting one click past f16 / f22 and will do the same but you don't have to select the appropriate f/stop. The camera will decide that.

BTW, Sears lenses are the same as Ricoh and are usually manufactured in the Cosina plant.
