You could make some paper bellows with lens groups mounted on wood and focus and zoom with two different rails scavenged from cheap macro bellows

True True. But I want to basically build a lens from the ground up without obviously grinding and smoothing the elements. Thats my next adventure after this and another lens creation.

Just an Update

So as an update to this thread. I have currently built my first lens from a Wollensak enlarging lens and an old T mount 135 prime sandwiched together with the 135's front elements removed. I have the L series lens down to the main body and the glass and am working the design now for the best possible image quality and easiest focusing method. The main problem has been picking which lens elements out of all the glass will make the best formula. It seems I will need at least two negative elements and two achromatic elements to make the flange length work right. Then comes where the aperture is and all that fun stuff. But progress is being made. This is an image taken with the first homemade lens!

Thanks! This was my first shot at making a decent lens and I think it did fairly good. Little Purple fringing but not too bad flare wise. The L series lens is currently getting disassembled and I found the lens formula so I can build a lens from it properly now!
