Pentax 50 F1.8

Just got my 50 F1.8 lens, and this is the first photo with it. I think I'm really going to enjoy this lens!

Nice! Yes, you will have fun with it. I don't use mine anywhere near often enough (LBA hit badly not long after I bought it, you see.)

Nice, however, I'm not sure what is the contribution on that particular lens at f8, the amount of light seems to be so that about every lens closed to f8 can deliver the same result. That photo is well lit, I like.

It is 4 degrees F below zero, so I was hasty in composing; my apologies.

I guess there is no contribution, I was just trying a new lens out.

We had some snow last night, I took my K-3 out for a walk, but there was no sun. Your photo has a lot of light, indeed much better.

Although you have a point, resolution and CA is still going to be better on a 50mm at f/8 than his 18-55mm or his 55-300mm at 50-55mm. On a monitor, it's a wash, but because I usually print A3+ or larger at 300 dpi, the difference is appreciable.

Less glass equals less distortion.

I got that lens recently too, Carol. It is a great lens to shoot with and you will like it a lot.
That is a nice first image and I'll never be able to compete with it as we never get snow where I live.

I respectfully disagree. Yes, shooting a fast lens in low light to gain shutter speed or for shallow depth-of-field are all good reasons to have f/1.8. But in the particular shot you posted, you wanted great depth-of-field but because of the hyperfocal distance, didn't need a small aperture that would have caused diffraction and a loss of the sharpness and detail. Whether you did it intentionally or not, I think shooting at ISO 200, at 1/320" (above 1/250" to eliminate potential internal mirror reflex vibration blur), and f/8 maximized your results from a technical perspective.
And of course the most important thing is that you got away from your computer, picked up the camera, took shots, and shared it. Thank you! If for no other reason than getting a new lens inspired or motivated you to do this, it works

That's pretty much how I felt about mine. Actually can't currently think of a more-fun-for-the-buck lens in the whole Pentax line-up. Affordable awesomeness. That's how you get people hooked on prime lenses.

Enjoy your purchase and keep shooting, Carol!

rayallen, I do love the snow; but not the sub zero temps. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of yours, as well!

Good the hear that you got your lens csa. Especially after reading about the problem you had with shipping.

I would like to get my hands on one but it's just not going to happen.
