I've been shooting some basketball lately and have found myself in rather challening conditions. Long story short, my DA* 60-250mm lens is damaged and is giving me soft images wide-open, so my options were limited to a DA 50mm f/1.8 and DA 18-135mm lenses. The DA 18-135mm has been giving me usable results for the last few games, but the slow aperture has made the results very challenging to post-process due to the poor lighting of the venue.
Just today, however, I decided to use my 50mm prime for much of the game. As a staff photographer with baseline access, 50mm proved to be enough for a good portion of shots when the action gets near the basket. At the cost of zoom flexibility and reach, the prime gave me the advantage of three extra stops of light and shallower depth of field. With the right technique, the results were nothing sort of epic. The shot for
this page is an out-of-camera JPEG taken with the DA 50mm, 1/500s f/2.2 ISO 1600.
I'll put some post-processed, full-size images on Flickr once I get them through my workflow.
