Vivitar 300mm f5.6 manual focus

Anybody know anything about this lens? I know that Vivitar makes (made?) mostly 'consumer' lenses, but there have also been a few gems in their line. Is it a dog or a darling?

M42 mount?

Are you looking at the M42 mount?

I just bought one with an M42 but haven't had a chance to try it out. This one has a 58mm diameter, manual-auto switch, and a "U" printed on the lens mount.
