When did your LBA abate ?

Little did I realise when I bought a new camera (A6000) and dug out an old SMC M 28m that it would bring me to this.

  • I've bought the logical ones - a range of wide and tele SMC-M
  • I've bought the esoteric ones - Helios and Volna
  • I'm currently looking at M39 lenses like old CZJ.Pancolar , Flektagon etc (and let's not mention the enlarger lenses for macro)
The first was logical, the second - well it's quality at a bargain price innit ? The third way ? Well I think I need help.

That said photography has not been this much fun for a very long time !

When I had too many, and was not using any of the old ones I loved... I was in love with the hunt, the capture and then the 'stick it on the shelf' looking for my next thrill...

Such an addiction!

What do you mean abate? I still have LBA, but there is no money to feed it...

When I realized I had 9,000+ negatives and slides to scan and post-process and 20,000+ digital images to post-process.

Additionally, I have no more safe places to store more lenses or cameras.

Abate? I'm thinking that nothing has abated. Nonetheless, I've been relatively successful in keeping the actual purchases at bay. And, I don't believe that the lens will actually make me a better photographer. What my problem seems to be is that regardless of which lens I have, I seem to think something else would land me in a happier place. Take normal zooms, for example. I have the DA18-55 II, DA 17-70, and DA* 16-50. Each of them actually performs quite well, but here I am, thinking that the DA 20-40 limited would take me to a happier existence regarding the normal zoom. Or maybe just 4 primes in the range.

You'll never know until you try.

Only when my bank account emptied. You can see that this is a (hopefully) temporary abatement; though, this time, likely a long-lasting one.

BTW, this is a very amusing question to ask on this (particular) Forum.

It may happen when I go to the pearly gates or more than likely the "other place"....If Pentax is there, then I will still have LBA and hopefully prices will still be historically low!

Your question doesn't make sense. There will always be one more lens. Just one more.

I've never been afflicted with LBA (or for that matter CBA) beyond lenses with either Asahi or Pentax engraved on them somewhere. Once I have one I seek no other of its genus. My mistress is forgiving, to a point. I lust after K-series lenses. M, A, F, FA - they just don't excite me. Aside from a few extreme and specialty lenses I have them - and I am somewhat sated.

Even should I pursue every Pentax lens, thankfully there is a finite number of different models so LBA has some logical, eventual end point.*

* I actually own an M50/2 - but it is Like New.

Well I began with some logic in terms of the "need" to get a suitable range of primes from 17mm through to 200mm. Going further out in the tele range generally seems to involve spending more money than the cheapskate in me would like but I suspect I will fall pray to a 300+ at some point based on some dubious justification.

After the mainstream primes (28/35/50/135/200) it's then a search for the right bokeh or best IQ at the lowest price. Then of course there's the allure of specialist stuff like macro. I'll be picking up a Volna 50mm macro when I nip home to the UK over Christmas (oh and another Helios and er, a 17mm Pentax SMC). That's another problem. I live in the US but some of the more esoteric FSR stuff is more widely available in the UK due to the popularity of the Zenits. I also have a nephew who is a keen photographer as well and he buys any UK seller stuff for me to pick up later. We have an agreement that I give him my old Canon gear and he doesn't tell anyone about what I buy :-)

I think Billy Joe above has it right with the love of the hunt aspect. My logical side says get a full set of lenses but justifying a set of Helios 44M lenses is a bit tenuous. Pretty soon I'll have a 44-2 (bokeh) 44-4 (better sharpness) and a fake 44-7 (aiming for bestest sharpness but actually a 44M).

My one regret in this is that my late father is no longer around to share war stories with. He was an inveterate buyer and seller of camera gear. He'd have loved to see how the legacy glass market has come in from the cold having spent so many years buying and selling old SLR gear when you couldn't give some stuff away. But thanks for the old Leicas Dad !

"When did your LBA abate ?"

Ha, ha, ha...hoo...ah...ha, ha...*slaps knee*...that's good, that's good...ha, ha...*wipes tear from eye*...ha...my sides hurt...ha, hoo...wait, you're serious?
Sorry, lost it for a minute there.

I'll update you if and when

I think the term addiction is very valid. I would imagine many on the forum are similar...not expecting the next lens to make me a master (or even half decent) photographer, but there is something in the thrill of the chase.

LBA is pretty much a secondary hobby to photography...related, but a hobby in its own right.
Trawling eBay and here in Australia, Gumtree (like Kijiji?), looking for hidden gems...coming across poorly described lots and trying to work out from the dodgy photos if that lens could be a [insert Holy Grail lens] and has any other bidder worked it out? A need to stop at every garage (yard) sale I drive past "just in case".

I fluctuate between saying to myself "what are you doing...that's enough!" and resigning myself to the fact that for many the urge to collect is part of human nature...could be stamps, military badges (my dad), pocket knives (my friends dad), guitars (a few on this forum), model trains (a few on this forum) and so on...I guess there are collectors of anything, right?

So...that's it for me only waiting on one package from eBay at the moment, nothing much on Gumtree (though I had a great score about a month ago)...hmmm, probably time to sell a few items...and so it goes...

Happy festive season and New Year to you all!

Cheers
Dean

HAR !!!

In brief, it ~hasn't~ abated.

In fact, I'm gonna re-write my will to have my "estate" (yeah, riiiiight...) buy still more lenses and have them distributed to my heirs.

Heck, now that I think of it, if it's true that "you can't take it with you", well, um, er, if I can't take my F* 300/4.5 with me, I ~ain't~ goin' !!!
