Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for sports

I've been thinking of getting this lens for when it comes out in Pentax mount to satisfy the need for a fast telephoto...is it possible to hand hold this lens or would it require at least a monopod? I thought this seemed like a good choice for shooting some local high school football games from the sidelines or are there any other better choices out there?

Canon Board - View Single Post - [test] TAMRON 70-200 2.8 Di LD Macro

edit: Just realized i put this in the wrong category...mods please move this to slr lens

I have one of these on order through my local shop since it was announced. The other option in this range is the new Sigma also not released yet but it has HSD and is about $100.00 more. I order mine for shooting hockey and basketball, as far as hand holding I do with my Sigma 70-300 but the monopod is helpfull.

I hand hold a D1h or D2h and the Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR lens at my equine events. 99.9% sharp an useable images.

Its more than doable with the Tamron, i would suspect.

I'd say it should be very doable ... especially with SR.

I can't wait till the Tammy 70-200 is available ... and using my Tammy x1.4 TC attached to it as well ... should net some half decent results I reckon.

Hee hee ... I wish ... I hardly get time to get out lately and shoot.
I can't wait for a decent longer lens ... my 75-300mm is okayish for a consumer lens ... and that is all really.

if it is as good as the sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX then it will do just fine.

You should also invest in quality TCs. For my sigma I have both the 1.4 and 2x Sigma TCs and they work excellently with the sigma lens.

If you get the tamron, I would suggest tamron TCs

Tamron SP AF 70-200mm Di LD (IF) Macro Lens Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

dpreview did test the lens but for canon mount. they did mention something funny about the lens motor but Pentax will use the internal screwdrive motor

Autofocus speed could be the major drawback of this lens for Pentax. Especialy for sport events.

Give these guys a call. The Pentax mount is discontinued, but they may still have some in stock. Not on the website, but maybe in one of the 2 stores. Great shop BTW....

I have used the Sigma 70-200/2.8 with a 1.4x on it hand held for a few games of rugby (80 minutes). By the end you are getting tired, but it's not too bad. A monopod is preferred by me though, and I still haven't decided whether SR should be on or off! That Sigma 120-300/2.8 would be nice in a Pentax mount *sulk**

I found that a monopod or tripod greatly benefits image quality at those focal lengths (although a 1:250 is the slower speed you would use to stop sports action).
