Enjoyable thread.
Interesting that many of us have used (and still use) the 18-250 in similar ways. When you are travelling, or just out and about somewhere, the value of versatility can't be overstated. In my film SLR days I had two zooms, a 28-85 and a 70-210. Even with that modest collection I often missed the shot I wanted, just from having the wrong lens on. The superzoom was a revelation for nature walks - a bird one minute, a flower the next, then a wide angle shot, then a normal, and so on. Sure lenses like the 18-135 and 55-300 offer a lot of versatility too with more speed and a little better IQ (the 18-135 alone pretty much covers the 28-210 of my old SLR kit) but it's more to carry and you still miss the shots you want.
Sure at every focal length from 18-250 I have another lens that will do the job at least a little better. But to pursue Dewman's tools analogy, sometimes a shifting spanner beats carry a set of ring spanners - especially if you are careful in how you use it.
Compliments of the season to you all.
