AFGA CPL filter

AFGA the now semi-defunct film and paper manufacturer is selling Circular Polarizer filters for the outrageous price of $6.99 on Amazon ! Now you must be saying to yourself "I would not put a $6.99 filter on my "Limited" lenses, no way ! You may be right, but I was just looking for some CPL filters to use occasionally when I need them to knock-out the reflections coming from reflective surfaces.

Most of my Pentax lenses do a good job of darkening the sky so that's not why I purchased them. At that price I can have one for each lens without having to switch back and forth. I purchased three of them and so far they don't seem to affect picture quality, but don't quote me on this. I haven't really tested them yet. In any case, I wouldn't screw them on too tight.

A few years ago I purchased a couple of really expensive CPL's that set me back financially and how many times did I use them ? 2 or 3 times per year. As a matter of fact, they are still sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I looked at some moderately priced Hoya filters and they go for $30 and up, but after my experience with the more expensive filters, that can wait and I'm in no hurry...

I believe you made an excellent decision to buy AGFA. They made excellent film, paper and filters. I do have acquaintances in Germany and they inform me that AGFA has pretty much pulled the plug and are gone. I have many AGFA filters and they are of excellent quality.

Regards,

Tony

The Agfa filters, hoods, etc you see on Amazon are not your father's Agfa. It's merely a name licensed to whomever.

just like polaroid and a variety of other defunct manufacturers, the company names ended up getting sold off and used to sell low quality crap.

You always hope that it could be like the Schneider SLR lenses made by Pentax, but $6.99 for CPL makes you wonder. If you buy a few, test each one to see if it lowers lens sharpness. Sometimes lower price means less quality control.

Does the glass have a single layer of anti-reflective coating much less multi-coating to improve light transmission?

It's multi coated according to the specs.
